shaking while accelerating

hey, all. i just have a problem with my '99 ford taurus. whenever i accelerate over 40mph (and, to a lesser extent, when i'm slowing down), my car shakes quite a bit.

everyone i talked to said to have the tires balanced, and i just did that, but it doesn't seem to have had much effect. i just had the brakes done 2 months ago, so i don't think it's that.

any other ideas what might cause it? it's worse while accelerating, and it's pretty noticeable when i'm at 60mph, but it's not unbearable. i just want to make sure i'm safe.

what tires and rims do you have? Alot of installers don't do a very good job balancing rims on tauri because they figure the owners don't care if they're off a little. I've had the best luck going to small independent shops and make it clear that you know what you're talking about. Preferably you want a place with a road-force balancer but with factory rims a standard balancer should be fine if there's no problems with the wheel or tire.

I'm thinking that since you only have the problem on acceleration, the problem is not tires or wheels. Perhaps it's CV joints.

CV's are usually only a problem while turning and you would have a definite sound from them.

You might just need an alignment. I had the same problem at about 55mph in my old integra and an alignment cured that real good.

i dont think its any of the above.... just before i stopped using my cherokee it had a dead cylinder (its been sitting since) and it has caused the engine to misfire, if the engine's cylinders dont fire in the right order of if a cylinder does not work then when the engine is running it will not be balanced, and thus causing the shaking of your car. to check if its a dead cylinder get one of those things that go in the spark plug's hole to check the pressure, have someone turn the ignition just enough to get the engine to turn over so u could read the pressure of each cylinder, any more and the car will start with you right there.. and that wont be any fun... you could probably just bring it to a mechanic and tell them u think its a dead cylinder and u want them to check it out for you and they'll do it. good luck
