4TH Gen boasting 500+HP

Me and my dad are undergoing another project within the next year or so, we are going to purchase a 2000+ Camaro and we want to squeeze 500+HP out of it, what we are not certain of is if we are going to use, forced induction and beef up the internals or just stroke it and do a H/C job and other assorted options, this will be a daily driver so I would imagine a supercharger would be the most beneficial, lemme know what you guys think.

Or should I just go for the wholeshot and do all of it :naughty:

With the LS1, that should be a piece of cake. Shouldn't need forced induction, i think it can be done all N/A.

Not if they want it to be a daily driver. To get the stock cubed LS1 to 500 HP takes a lot. Race heads, the biggest cam, 90mm intake, ALL the bolt-ons, etc....

I recommend a full bolt-on car, then add an ATI ProCharger D1. 8-9 PSI will net the car around 525 RWHP, maybe more.
Of course, you will need a rear-end.

I am also talking about wheel HP numbers. 500 crank HP for an LS1 isn't that difficult. Still takes the best heads and a good sized cam. Mine is around 420-425 crank HP right now, and I am still on the stock heads.

Cheapest route for power though is boost. Supercharger is less cost than a turbo set-up, kinda. The STS Turbo kit isn't expensive. Turbo under the hood is though.

Mr. Lous, what else would you need to break the 500 mark? Where would some new heads put you at?

i dont see that being hard, most of the guys in my club are running that or more, 450 is really middle of the pack for the group, i have alot of catching up to do. we just finished a 01 ss that dynoed 960 the car is sick. not a daily driver, but he drives it on the street alot, damn thing has that electric exhaust where he kept his stock pipes and they are hooked up to some cut offs, so it's not loud untill he hits the button then its too late he got ya.

Mr. Lous, what else would you need to break the 500 mark? Where would some new heads put you at?
That all depends on the heads. Some good flowing heads thathave little distruption in flow would give me a great boost. Maybe to around 450 RWHP with the best heads I could get. With a great tune of course.
500 RWHP with an LS1 N/A is very difficult to achieve. It is do-able, but it takes a TON of work. And by then, the car isn't very much

If I wanted 500 RWHP N/A with the stock LS1, I would need a bigger cam, some GREAT flowing heads, and FAST 90mm throttle body and 90mm intake.
I plan on putting all that stuff on, but not on the LS1. The 402 is getting all that. :grinyes:
Hoping that is all done by the end of this race season.

the only thing i dont like about big ass cam's is how the car sounds like its gonna cut the hell off when its just idleing. i know it has that classic car muscle car sound but your car sounding like its about to stall aint cool at all. heres the story...u chillen at a red light and this fly shorty rolls up next to u, being the fly camaro guy we all are u speak to her, and she looks at u like how the hell u trying to talk 2 me and your car dont sound right??? im like wtf...unless your into cars and has been around them u wouldnt know any better but to think something is wrong with it...untill u hit the gas and u scream off like woo. the bottom line is i guess if u want 500hp or more your gonna have to give up something.

I too will be shooting for 500 RWHP N/A without bottle. But I might add something like a 50 shot, to say I have it.

I love that lumpy, bumpy mucle car sound!!! If the girl looks at you weird, rev it to 2000 and see what she says then.

The moral of the story: My camaro makes more torque at the front wheels than your honda does at the crank.[/rice-hate]

Then the idle is set too low. It should have a nice lope, but not completely sound like it will die.

Well either you can let it idle naturally and talk to her OR you can put the bitch in neutral and hit the gas a little to make it sound mean before she rolls next to ya.

500 horse at the flywheel can be accomplished on a LT1 as well without using a power adder. I have seen plenty of cars with a comp cam 306 profile and some ported or after market heads with a matched intake and some headers with a catback system and intake done up with a nice tune putting out that kinda power but its always easier if you use a charger or turbo or a little nos.

But which will provide the most reliability?

FormulaLT1
06-28-2005, 08:31 PM
As long as you buy quality parts and mod the car completely and equally (like if you increase fuel , you increase the air induction as well) either will be completely dependable. My car makes like right at the 500 mark and it starts right up and if your not nailing the gas will get around 20 -22 highway and like 17 - 18 city.

I'll do you one better, I am going to be making a video within the next few days, I am just waiting for my new hood to be put on but I recently installed my Vette block LT1 383 with a comp cam 306 profile done up with forged internals and fully ported heads. I took 97camarors for a ride last week, he can confirm the fact that this bitch can break the rears loose pretty much up to tripple digits.

Will do, I am hoping for 11's. but we shall see. I currently am working on the suspension so traction won't be such a issue but I am sure it will still hook up nicely with my drag radials.

How much, John? If an Lt1 bolts right up to my tranny I might be able to get one off your hand.

FormulaLT1
07-02-2005, 01:42 AM
I meant the cam's. I have one LT1 I plan to sell soon but its not ready yet and another is a bare block but if you have a 305 or 350 in your current Third gen, then yes it would bolt right up to the tranny. If its a sixer then you would need to change the tranny as well.

Rally Sport
07-02-2005, 01:47 AM
Whats the difference though? I thought they all had the same tranny according to what it was, I got an auto and yes I do have a 6.

FormulaLT1
07-02-2005, 02:02 AM
The bellhousing bolt pattern is different. They are both 700r4 but the contact pattern where it bolts up to the engine won't match up.

89IROC&RS
07-02-2005, 12:23 PM
V8's are 90 degrees, and he sixers if memory serves is a 60 degree engine, causing the difference in bolt patterns. cept for the 4.3L which is 90 degrees :)

Rally Sport
07-02-2005, 12:25 PM
Hmm seems for me to get a better engine im going to have to get a better tranny. What would you suggest? Something cheap though.

89IROC&RS
07-02-2005, 12:41 PM
steal it?????????

or, junkyard, doner cars.

Rally Sport

Hm, so if I were to get a tranny from a V8 3rd gen Firebird (Which I saw, btw in a junkyard) it'd be better than my v6 tranny?

89IROC&RS
07-02-2005, 12:52 PM
oh i didnt realize thats what you were asking, no the trannies are the same, its the bellhousing thats different, its just the bolt pattern to hold them to the engine. the internals of the V6 and V8 transmissions are the same.

Rally Sport
07-02-2005, 01:02 PM
Alright I see, so are all the trannys like this? Seems like a real bitch to those who want to move up in engine sizes from a six.

FormulaLT1
07-02-2005, 07:14 PM
Actually some V8 model 700r4 & 4l60 & 4l60-E have better/bronze internals and a better servo but 700R4 for V8's are a dime a dozen at the salvage yards, I am sure I can get you one for like 300 -400 bucks and it will even have a 100 day warranty but you should know that a drivetrain swap involves alot of work and many have stopped 1/4 of the way in and never touched the cars again only to sell them for like 1/10 of what they use to be worth.

Rally Sport

I know a guy that has one for sale. No accessories, but it is a complete longblock. Assembled heads, cam, injectors, fuel rails, oil pump, timing chain, no intake though.....

Mr. Luos
07-02-2005, 11:06 PM
Not sure yet.

That is what I would like to get. It should be in great shape.
If I could go lower, I would. I have seen the A/C alone go for $200. Crazy.

What were you looking to pay??

Rally Sport
07-03-2005, 12:52 AM
1500, I dont care for the A/c so if you could take THAT off to lower the price its all good.

Mr. Luos
07-03-2005, 10:08 AM
That sounds good.

I need to get the motor out, and get some pics of it first. Make sure everything is in good shape.
