whoohoo..there was a local competition near where i live. it costed $30 bucks to enter:mad: anyways, my mom drove me there with the van where i have the pioneers at. seeing i was a kid, many people under-estimated me:) it was like "i bet that kid can't even hit 120's" or "is this some kind of a joke?" it was my turn to compete. they put the mic on the dash where its suppose to be:p first time i screwed up cuz the amp gain was set all the way to low. i forgot to tune it before i burped it. after i set me gains, i laid a consistant 139-140dB. my peak was 140.3dB. it was fun seeing those guys drop their jaws. here's a run down on my system, well part of it:

clarion headunit-free from neighbor
(2) pioneer 10" TS-W254C- friend bought it for $49.95 each
(1) Profile 600MSX- $129.99 (just bought it last week)
(6) stock speakers

the van played a big role in this. without it, i would have hit in the mid 30's. anyways, i'm happy with the score. oh yea, this amp pushes a mere 400x1watts RMS at 2ohm

where do you guys normally get metered? only at comps or what? are there cheap meters out for consumer purchase?

Nope, no cheap meters in the publics hands... local competitions, and shops that hold the competitions are about the only places to get metered less you happen to have your own $3000 setup in your garage like Alma Gates does :flipa:

My old manager had a probe with 4 12s in the high 140s.

He told me my old beetle was probably in the low 140s, but i never had it metered. I have an enclosure where the backseat was supposed to be. Maybe ill post pics sometime

...and I never said there wasn't units available to the public, I just said CHEAP units. My opinion is that this is the biggest waste of $300 you could possibly make... it only measures upto 150dB... ok, great thats fantastic -- anyone hitting under 150dB shouldnt care enough to buy something like this unit as they are just "on the weekends" kind of competitors... which, you can just wait till the next local show to get your results. if you want to know what you hit, goto your local shop with a meter and spend $10:D
