I have an 89 S10 pickup 4.3 2WD and I was told that the upper control arm bushings were shot. They said it's common to this vehicle at about 100K mile due to the exhaust being close to the bushings. How difficult is it (and how) to replace these bushings?

My advice if you want to save some money on this job is to take the control arms off the truck and take it to a front end shop to change the bushings. Those are a almost impossible to change if you don't have the tool kit to change them. Even then they are still hard to change. I took all four control arms on my truck to a shop to have them changed. They changed all eight bushings and turned my rotors for $80.00. Worth every cent. I also find it hard to believe they need to be changed after only 100,000 miles. My truck had 240,00 miles on it and the bushings still weren't all that bad. I went ahead and changed them because I did a complete front end rebuild.

They're probably bad if they weren't greased.
If they were maintained properly then they're probably fine

At least that's what the (Goodyear) tech told me. I don't know how true it is since I don't know much about frontends or what to look for. I brought it in 'cause it seems to pull to the left and has some 'shimmy' in the frontend.
Also the routine maintenance of this truck was neglected except for oil changes when I bought it so I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't lubed.
