So how many of you actually play guitar and what style of guitar do you play like Rock, Blues, Jazz, and Stuff? What kind of guitar do you have?
I'm learning how to play guitar and I'm trying to learn Stevie Ray Vaughan style of guitar and I want to play the Blues...
I have a Squire Strat from the Strat Pack from Guitar Center...

I play an electric Peavy Patriot, which I want to sell end get an acoustic. I play country, with a little rock mixed in. Shooter Jennings and Big and Rich stuff.
I'm not that good, as I just picked it up after a few years of neglecting the guitar.
Anyone wants to make an offer on the Patriot, PM me.

I play a hot rodded Fat Strat (electric) and a solid top cutaway Takamine (acoustic). I play a LOT of rock and blues, and am starting to get more into jazz/funk.

I have an american standard strat, alvarez acoustic, and takamine classical that is older than i am.
I play a variety of stuff, on the electric i like to play more bluesey stuff, clapton, allman brothers, etc.
On the acoustic I bring it around for the drunken nights playing songs that are fun to sing to, a bunch of southern rock like skynyrd or allman brothers or dylan, oar, stuff of that sort.
Then I play classical.... i love to sit around and jam out with some bach...nothing like it.

Ibanez makes good bass' for the $. I got mine new for under $300 and never regretted it. Active pickups are great for bass but on guitar, I think you have to love a fat humbucker sound to get them. If your into blues/ Jazz styles you will probably want a quality single coil pickup. I have a split-coil Seymore Duncan in my Jap-Strat and love it. I also have a rebuilt Epiphone SG copy, and a Takamine acoustic.
Been at it for 16years but only seriously for about 5. Used to play Hardcore punk but I've mellowed considerably. Lessons in Jazz and Classical Theory. Stopped playing altogether about 3 years ago.
If you seriously want to learn, Memorize your five scale patterns, learn your notes up and down the fretboard. Learn to build chords with 7ths then learn to arpegiate them. Once you learn all that, forget the technical shit and put your soul in it! Seen too many musicians waste away to complexity. You started playing because you have passion. Don't forget that!
I'm sure you don't need to hear it from me, but hell, I ain't busted out the soap box in awhile.

ive got several guitars, but my pride and joy is my seagull acoustic. beautiful guitar. ive been playing for 8 years, and i still have no intention of ever buying another guitar. its perfect.
as for what i play. i enjoy the folkier side of things (bob dylan, jim croce, etc) when i play, which is odd because i listen to hardcore and punk mainly.
though i do pick up the fender strat and wail a little blues and rock when im feeling loud.

I love the blues guitar style and it is just your soul playing it and I'm messing around and trying ot make up a blues song and have been playing some of the greatest blues legends stuff for awhile like SRV songs and others...
I can't wait til I get good and can really play... I will be an awesome guitarist in the future and I try to play at least every day for a couple of hours...

also challange you self, don't just stick to the easy shit.....and make up your own songs.
get into the habbit of up and down strokes. its so much easyer to play faster.
do exercises that involve your pinky (and all others, duh) and play standing up (this sounds stupid but if u ever get in a band......u get the point) its way different than sitting down.
it might sound like a lot now but it'll be second nature in no time at all

The SRV style is one of the hardest styles to learn since you strum evry note and have to muffle 4 or more strings and stuff... Professional guitarists said his style is one of the hardest of all time, also he used his thumb which is quite difficult to use because if you don't have a long thumb then your SOL...

You should always be muting any string that you're not using at the time though. Agreed about the thumbs though, if you don't have big fingers it's very difficult to play some guitar music. Hendrix and Chuck Berry could stretch 13 frets along the neck with their hands. I used to think the 10 I can get was pretty good, but 13 is insane.

how can u stretch 13 frets? i can stretch 11 if i start on 13 and go to 24, but if i start at 1 i can only get to 5

You can tell from pretty much any video of Hendrix that he had huge hands with really long fingers. Plus the more you play the more your fingers can stretch.

...Were their hands the size of basketballs or something? Joises, 13 frets, woah, I can't believe that, no way.
They could stretch, but not 13 frets, that's humanly impossible, unless the frets were the width of pencils.

I'm talking strectching the tip of your pinkie to the tip of your thumb along the fretboard. Seriously, watch a video of Hendriz playing and you won't doubt it anymore. It's not that hard to believe...Rachmaninov could stretch over 2 octaves on a piano with one hand

In your defence I took measurements of my two gutiars (one is a 21 fret fender), and my 24 fret XCort, I'll put pics up as soon as I can and the verdict.
Here are the stats:
Fender:
1-13th fret = 31cm, verdict impossible.
13-??? verdict not determined, insufficient number of frets
XCort:
1-13th fret = 30cm verdict impossible
12-25th fret (25th fret non existant) approx 25cm. Verdict not likely, but probably not impossible.
I do have pics of the ruler next to the fret board.
I'm still calling :bs:

It is by far bs, besides just because you can stretch your hand across the fretboard doesnt make you a good guitarist. Jimi may have had big hands, and he may have been a decent guitarist, he was far from a god send end all savior to guitarists across the globe that all guitarists strive to become

I use my thumb for some chords:
In Pinkfloyd's "wish you were here" is a variation of a D chord with the added F sharp on the E string* (trying not to strain my drunk brain with chord names...does that rhyme?) It would be uncomfortable to play with the regular 4 fingers of the D chord (Standard D chord).
* Here is the Variation:
e-2--------------
B-3------------
G-2-----------
D----------------
A-x-------------
E-2------------
Hendrix used his thumb a lot.
I disagree with Skyline, most guitar books won't tell you not to use it, they either encourage it where possible, or not cover it at all.

The style I was talking about was the Stevie Ray Vaughan style, just the way he played is hard to copy, but if you think it isn't hard to play, I would want to see you copy it exactly like him, struming all the strings while only playing one string and doing it very fast...
The Hendrix style is close to the SRV style and if you hear both of them you can see the SRV's style is very close to the Hendrix style but hendrix's style is much easier than the SRV style... His sytle is far more complicated then hendrix and it is still one the hardest to copy because of how he played, and most famous guitaruist and magazines and stuff have said the sRV guitar style is one of the most complicated styles to learn in guitar HISTORY...
