replacing auto-tensioner

hey everybody,
I have a 92 dodge grand caravan with a 3.3L engine. I've been having trouble with the serpentine belt slipping off. I replaced it and put the new one on, only to have it fall off again. I know I put it on correctly so the problem is with the auto tensioner. My question is how to I go about replacing this? All i do is but the spring under load when I rotate the unit. Any tips? Thanks!

Andrew

anyone have any clue? I'm running out of time before I have to call a mechanic and thats the last thing I want to do. Sorry to be impatient.

Remove the belt and relieve the tension from the tensioner itself. Depending on the model of tensioner there may only be one bolt or up to three bolts that hold it to the block. Remove the mounting bolts, replace the tensioner with a new one and put the belt back on. Takes about 30 minutes if you don't have trouble getting the belt back on.

its a 3.3L so the tensioner has one bolt. but how do I get back there? working from under the van the power steering pump is in the way and working from under the hood the alternator is in the way. one of them has to come out for me to get to the nut holding the tensioner on, but which one would be easiest?

Remove the alternator. It is much easier to remove than the power steering pump.
