manual transmission problem

I have a 99 Wrangler Sport with 104000 miles. It is the 5 speed manual, 4.0. I have been on deployment since the end of February, and my wife has been running the engine for me since I left. However, she has not driven it. A couple of weeks ago I asked her to move it for me. She said that it would not go into gear. I have had her try to pump the clutch several times and it still would not go into gear. I am not there so I can't do any troubleshooting myself, but I was looking for ideas that I could tell her to try. Any suggestions??

Navy_flyer, first of all, thanks for the job you're doing over there.

I'd get her to check if the gears can be changed while the engine is off. This'll likely tell you if the problem is in the clutch (which we suspect already) or the trans.

On these models I believe it's a hydraulic clutch; so you may be looking at replacing the hydraulic clutch actuator, which I think is a sealed unit. (My wife's 02 came from the factory with a bad unit)

I had my wife try to get it into gear with the engine off. It initially would not shift, but after she pumped the clutch a couple of times, it went into gear. When she started the engine with the clutch pedal down, the Jeep lurched at first. On the second try, the engine started and she was able to drive it back and forth. Is the problem more likely a clutch problem or a tranny problem? Thanks for your help.

Sounds like the clutch, but there is no reason for it to mess up from sitting. You sure your wife hasn't been driving it? No offense on any trust issues, but clutches don't just quit.

I'd ask her to go for a real drive, for a couple miles (if possible) since the Jeep is now moving. Get her to observe how it behaves.
