Need to put in a new alternator. How do you get the darn thing out. We tried and can't get to it. Is there a site or something to go to. Or if you have replaced an alternator on a 98 Ford Contour I would appreciate the help asap. The local mechanic wants 600 dollars to do it. If we could just get it off the car we could fix it please please please help me

You have to get it up off the ground and go in from underneath. My meachanic is in reality missing his thumb and finger next to it, he changed it in 1/2 hour. It just needs to be off the ground and have some extentions for the ratchet. Mine had the DOHC V6 in it.

Sounds about right to me. As long as you have all the right size sockets, extensions, and rachets for the hard to reach places its not too bad at all even with oversized exhaust manifolds that are in the way for my turbo.

I moved mine out of the way when I put headers on the car. If you can get it off the ground and remove the passenger tire and wheelwell liner you should be set. Like everyone else said, you'll want to have a selection of extensions and a u-joint.
