I have a problem with my Ford 2000 Escort ZX2. I recently had the transmission replaced, and now I am having a Service Engine Soon light. All indications show it is that the Lock-Up Converter (I think that is what he called it) is not working properly, so the Service Engine Soon lights gets turned on.
The transmission seems to work right to me, but then again, I would have no idea it if was not working exactly right.
The guy who replaced my transmission has replaced the sensors, and checked all the wiring, but says he cannot fight the fault.
When the engine light is reset, it turns back on after two starts of the car.
Any idea what could be the culprit? Any idea where I could go to look? The error code is 1714, I believe.
Thanks!

well, i have a 96 sable ls and i have the same light on since ive had the car (1.5 yrs) i have tried to fix it but you cant win, i have had the EGR valve replace, vaccum lines replaced, etc. i think it is a fluke, FYI, that stupid lil light will come on if your gas cap is not tight enough or isnt holding a good enough seal....the sensor for that damn light is touchy. hope this helps. l8r

If this is a 4 speed transmission then you can tell if the lock-up is working by how manty times it shifts. I think it shifts 4 times-
1st shift is 2nd gear
2nd shift is 3rd gear
3rd shift is 4th gear
4th shift is the lock up.

Sport Scort- I think those '96 Sable and Taurus are notorious for defective transmissions. There has been a class action lawsuit on this. If you replaced you tranny then Ford may pay you back. This car also has a problem with the electronic ignition chip overheating. The car will die when hot and won't restart until it cools. Also a lawsuit item :shakehead
