Changing a '98 intrepid starter

I know many of you have had the starter changed in your Intrepids. Can anyone tell me how to get the starter out? I am trying to remove it myself, but Ican't get it past the catalytic converter. Is it okay to loosen it up? Or are there seals that will have to be replaced?
