Mclaren F1 video list

Hi all, I'm new to the forums and am very impressed with the amount of mclaren f1 info and media I have found here, as well as the passion and dedication of the people! (and even a couple of f1 owners, imagine that)

I've been collecting pictures and media of the f1 for quite a while, but never came across this site before for some reason, I suppose it was only a matter of time.

Anyhow, to the point of the thread. Here is a list of all the mclaren vids I have at the moment, I would like to know if there are others of significance I am missing... (I'm sure everyone here has already got the ones I have - in the unlikely event this isn't so, I'm happy to send them, or upload them somewhere)

-----------------------------------------------------

Main Videos:

Top Gear-Mclaren F1.asf [27mb] (Tiff Needells first review and roadtest of the Mclaren f1)

Top Gear-XJR15 & Mclaren.avi [45mb] (Jeremy Clarkson testing both - taken from a larger clip)

Top Gear-Mclaren UK Speed Record.mpeg [26mb] (Tiff Needell setting some UK lap record 195mph)

BestMotoring_Mclarenf1.asf [60mb] (Japanese review and road test of the TAG Heuer mclaren)

5thGear_GreatestCar.wmv [72mb] (Tiff Needell revisiting two ferraris and the mclaren)

Top Gear-SupercarComparison [79mb] (Jeremy Clarkson comparing past and present supercars)

132/133/134.wmv [26mb combined] (3 part in car video of a mclaren driving around the nurburgring)

MclarenF1 Top Speed Record Run [4mb] (Low quality in-car vid of andy wallace setting 391kph top speed record)

MclarenF1vsToyotaSupra [2mb] (Low quality vid of just that - by the way, has this any relation to the best motoring vid?)

BM_1995_Supercar Battle [64mb] (Supercar race, mclaren loses badly - bah, who was driving??)

MOV02873/4 [10mb combined] (Video taken from within Mclaren Cars HQ.. just some guy revving the mclaren)

Other videos:

Numerous small and low quality clips of various GTRs.. [3-4mb or less]

2 Videos of (Selldorfs?) LM.

Gumball3000 LM clip.

Need for speed 2 mclaren clips.

Small video of K4 MCL mclaren burning rubber [411kb]

------------------------------------------------------

Thats about it, I know there are those 6 vids peloton found that are still to come, but other than those.. what have I missed?

Also, is there somewhere, like an FTP, everyone can use and upload all their stuff to? That would be useful, to have a central database of all this media..

:)

Hi all, I'm new to the forums

Welcome to the F1 shrine, MrMan!

Main Videos:

other than those.. what have I missed?

Good work making a list. I'm trying to be structured with my pics, but videos, I don't really know what I have. But I will look into it.

Also, is there somewhere, like an FTP, everyone can use and upload all their stuff to? That would be useful, to have a central database of all this media..

:)

An FTP place to store a collection of files. Well, there's free solutions out there, but the free-aspect fucks up the usability. I don't know many, but what about rapidshare (although I believe it has lost popularity).
Then there's yousendit.com but it only stays on 7 days and you can e-mail it to one person?

Anyway, I'm sure others will come up with better solutions.
Once you know them and are able to upload stuff, I'm sure to download a few of your list.

Enjoy the forum!

Welcome aboard! We're always happy to have another enthusiast in the mix.

Top Gear-SupercarComparison [79mb] (Jeremy Clarkson comparing past and present supercars)

This is the 'Nick Mason Enzo' video, correct? Otherwise I am not certain I am familiar.

MclarenF1vsToyotaSupra [2mb] (Low quality vid of just that - by the way, has this any relation to the best motoring vid?)

BM_1995_Supercar Battle [64mb] (Supercar race, mclaren loses badly - bah, who was driving??)

The first video is related to the second one with the Supercar Battle - both are from Best Motoring, but from a different tape than the "Japanese review and road test of the TAG Heuer mclaren" which I happen to own a copy of. The McLaren lost badly in the race on track due to the rain. It's never been a car that can be driven at 9 or 10/10ths in the rain. I recall that Naoki Hattori was the driver of the McLaren in nearly every instance on the Best Motoring tapes. I would like to find the second Best Motoring tape with this comparison, but to date don't know which month/year it was.

TV Series

"The Cars the Star" - Was a BBC series. With Quentin Willson talking about the F1. Circa 20 mins long. Has an accountant at the end who owns a Papya long tail race car as well as an ordinary car.

I will try and capture / upload this at some stage.

Production Video

"McLaren at Le Mans" - I have never seen this video. Its been well sold out for years now. Whether a copy will turn up on eBay I have no idea.

Small 13mb clip from it here (http://chrisetben.free.fr/videos_lemans/Le%20Mans%20-%20Andy%20Wallace%20-%20Mc%20Laren%20F1%20-%201995.wmv)

Another Video from Le Mans 30mb (ish) (http://www.kameludlejning.dk/lemans/filer/Filmklip/Le%20Mans%20-%20Tour%20de%20circuit.mpg)

I'd love to see the first video you mention. That longtail papaya GTR would be #27R and it, along with the road car, were purchased with embezzled funds so the story goes. The accountant should be James Munroe.

Its funny you say that.

We thought the exact same thing. Just how many "Accountants" can afford those sorts of costs. We figured he must be connected in some way :D

I'll look into connecting the video up.

I have got "The Cars the star" captured. Its a 181mb ASF file. Quality is pretty good, but not 100% say 90%

Any suggestions as I havent got the space and cant email it because its bigger than the 10mb Hotmail allows.

Hi all. I actually split the video into 4 parts. And Used Rapidshare.de. They're all around the 45mb and 5 min mark each.

Hopefully these will work.

http://rapidshare.de/files/2918271/TCTS-F1_chunk_1.asf.html

http://rapidshare.de/files/2919267/TCTS-F1_chunk_2.asf.html

http://rapidshare.de/files/2922506/TCTS-F1_chunk_4.asf.html

You'll have to excuse Mr Willsons fake posh accent. Its no wonder the rest of the world thinks we all talk like that :D

Apologies as it does skip a few times. Not unwatchable, but I noticed them.

EDIT: Oh that Hakkinen clip is good above. Tight up to the point when he mentions TURBOS!

Yeah - we have had the same commentary in the past when that one was posted.

You can look at it two ways I guess - either "What was he thinking?!?!?!" in the sense that someone in his position at the time should clearly have known the specifications on the McLaren F1's engine. Or, you could look at it in the sense that the F1's lump must be truly impressive to open up if a Formula One driver of Hakkinen's caliber is given the impression that it isn't simply a normally aspirated unit.

yeah I noticed that too, I wasn't sure if he said Turbo at all, had to listen to it a couple of times, because it just didn't seem like the kind of thing an f1 driver would mistake in a car..

On the other hand (and I am pretty ignorant of the development of the f1, really ought to get a copy of DA) Didn't mclaren test a turbo on the car at some point? I vaguely recall reading that somewhere.. he was driving the XP5, though I would have thought they'd have chucked it out by that time..

Turbocharging was never part of the engine development of the McLaren F1. Murray's design brief for the F1 specifically stated the engine would be normally aspirated, and no F1 prototype was ever tested with any powerplant other than the BMW unit that would end up in the production cars.

The one slight exception to the above statement was "Albert", the earliest F1 test mule which was actually based on a very early version of the Ultima GTR. That car used a large V8 engine in order to simulate the torque that was expected from the BMW engine. The second test mule, "Edward" - again based on an Ultima GTR - was the first car to be fitted with the BMW engine.

Get the book - you'll love every page.

Below mention is quoted from part of the letter of Gordon Murray saying as to supercharger with turbocharger sent to Evo. And Kirium posted.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

JB: Would you give the F1 any more power if you could?

GM: No. To put that into perspective, we did all the sums and my target was 450lb ft of torque with 550bhp, which we thought was about enough for 200mph – enough for a road car. But what we wanted was 1000 kilos, 450lb ft and a really square torque band, not a peaky engine and that what Paul Rosche (BMW Motorsport engine designer) delivered – with 627bhp for free – and although we missed the weight target by about 100 kilos, that the combination that gives you the instant buzz when you bang the throttle open. All horsepower gives you is top speed. Horsepower on its own is absolutely nothing.

JB: Presumably working on the SLR you’ve come to embrace the supercharger as a different way of gaining performance?

GM: No. Given a totally open choice I’d always go for normal aspiration, for everything: weight, complexity, efficiency, drivability. Supercharging is much better than turbocharging for all the obvious reasons but also has its drawbacks. If you want 500 horsepower, net, you’ve got to make 700 because 200 goes to driving the supercharger, and then you’ve got to cool that power. The small throttle response problem you can get over with bypass valves and things. It’ll never be normally aspirated, but it’s certainly a hell of a lot better than turbocharging.

When you go to create a new ftp set up with the ftp client, it should ask for 3 things.

1. Server
2. Username
3. Password

to access the ftp I've set up use the following information exactly.

Server: "exoticcarsite.com"
username: "mclaren1"
password: "mclaren1"

Ofcourse without the "" bits.

That should do it :)

If not, I recommend ACEFTP 3, its a freeware program that I use.

acutally, the tow passengers sitting in the car were the translator for the show and the tv host. and the full sentence was (something like) "its certainly very noisy in here, doesn't sound as good i think, the others, [you can hear the turbo whisling]" i think they edited that front bit out coz it was ment to be a story about how good the f1 really is, but certainlly bad editing.

i've seen the entire thing on tape when i was in hongkong about 8 years ago. and it had about 40 mintus more than the ones on the net.

F1 monster
07-14-2005, 11:56 AM
Interesting. That makes a little more sense. They were saying that it does not sound as good as the others [other cars] where you can hear the turbos whistling.

Am I correct in my understanding?

yes f1 monster, i remember very clearly coz that's the show that i know there is a car called mclaren, my previous favriout car was the f40 which mika tested as well as the bugatti, both of them were turbo charged. it was mika who made the comment, it was the translator

Yes, at high speeds, it takes a LOT of horsepower to drive a supercharged engine. I don't remember the details, but I read about this very recently so it must have been in one of the current magazines. The numbers were scary, but I have forgotten where I read it. Perhaps EVO or Top Gear?

And then he is asking if the links to the above movies work--the answer is, yes, they work. But you have to wait 20 seconds or so before the download button shows up.

Great thread, and forum. I'm a bit late to arrvie here so it seems the rapishare links dont work anymore, are the files or that movie available somewhere? I can't seem to get into FTP either.. :uhoh: Are they "off air"?

I've two videos that I haven't found here, yet. One is the top speedrun, posted I know, but this is high res 640x480. It's actually from www.fastdrive.org so just pop in there and download, search for mclaren and you'll find it  The other is from the same "event" but is "only" an accelaration from 100 - 340 in 20 sec.. porn for the ears... :grinno: you can read the digital speedo installed (also readable in the high res speedrun video)

Edit: forgot to add that the 100-340 video isn't uploaded anywhere yet, I'll post back when it's up somwhere.

Cheers!
