okokok... After I drive my maro for a lil bit and it warms up, there's a vibrating kind of noise that travels up the shifter, not like the shifter is loose, it's more of a grinding vibrating noise. Sort of like if you dropped something into the shifter boot and it's rattling between the console, the boot and the shifter. Gets worse the more you drive it, but it you hold the shifter back against the (gate?) it doesn't make the noise.... only if it's in gear and kind of just sitting there. After it's been sitting a good while it starts normal and gradually the noise comes and keeps getting louder.
Details:
M22 4 speed. Only happens in 2nd and 4th, and I'm fairly certain the synchronizers are shot. It slips out of second when decellerating and it grinds fourth.
1. Could this be the synchro's failing? or is it a more serious problem?
2. How hard is it to rebuild a Munice 4 speed? Any special tools needed?
I need to keep this as cheap as possible.

all i can tell u is that it sounds like that grinding noise that gets louder is the shifter slowely workin its way out of the gear... i'm not knowledgable on trannies i wish i coul help more. if u buy a new 4-speed u wouldn't have to rebuild it...

oh as cheap as possible, look for a used municie on ebay or something, one that wouldn't need imediate rebuild...

Well I was kind of hoping to go with a T5 when it comes time to replace it, but at $1000 or so (assuming that's what they go for) I thought maybe it would cheaper & easier to just pull it and rebuild it.

not really sure, im not even sure the M22's were syncronized to be honest. Id swing by the local dealership and ask to talk to their transmission guy about it.

a t5 prolly won't handle the power u are putting out... u'd either have to go w/ a heavy duty t5 which is about 2 grand i believe, or find a used t56... personally i'd go w/ the t56... i wonder why? lol

I went to Richmond's website and used one of their calculators... If I got a t5 that had a .64 overdrive in it, I could get to like 183 at 6500 RPMs. I think it was right around 3050 RPMs for 90 mph.
A guy at a local speed shop told me the exact opposite... T56 can't handle the HP a T5 can. I found a website that sells T5's that'll handle up to 600 HP... I'll need to get mine dyno'd first I guess.
The thing that got my attention is that a T5 is one hell of a lot cheaper than a T56. And a T5 will fit with minimal modifications, whereas the T56 will "take alot of work" to get into my maro. They have about the same final OD ratio, so I guess it really doesn't matter to me... All I know is I gotta bend over sooner or later... and I'd MUCH rather it be later.

well when it comes to factory stock transmissions the T5 is weak in the knees, and wont handle power, thats why it wasnt offered behind the 350. The T56 is a power handler, hence the reason its behind the 405hp LS6. When it comes to aftermarket, then the question is how much do you want to spend. There are aftermarket T56's behind 1000hp dodge vipers, and im sure there are some bulletproof T5's out there too. so just make sure the cheap T5 you get is not one of the weak ones out of a factory vehicle, and is one of the strong units from the aftermarket.

Tremec came out with the new TKO600, its a 5 speed. They are stronger than any factory T5 or T56 and they are priced somewhere in between. Here is a link to start you out. http://www.classicchevy5speed.com/tremec_transmissions_tko_details.htm

That, actually, is the exact site I was looking at... and got scared when I saw the price. But yeah... was looking at the TKO600.
Thanks 89, I wasn't aware there really was a difference between the stock transmissions and the aftermarket ones.
....
HOWEVER... is it hard to rebuild an M22? and does it require a whole bunch of tools or will a standard set + torque wrenches cover it? I might do this to get by until I have the boatload of money required to get the TKO600.

Yeah it may not be a real cheap option, but it looks like it would do the job well. I kind of made up my mind to use that trans if I would ever blow mine out. I just thought it was interesting how that website had a segment on a guy who put one in his 70 camaro.
