A/C Compressor Problem!

After charging about half a can of refridgerant today... my a/c was noticably colder but it makes sort of a grinding noise and a clicking sound. Watching it from under the hood it would spin and click - after clicking it would stop spinning. I was pretty sure it was normal to click if low on refridgerant. But checking my gauge first it would say 45 on the low side, and when it would click it would straight down to 25 ....over and over. So I waited till it clicked to about 25 adding little by little refridgerant. After I saw the 45 go to the yellow zone. I quit ...after the engine has been run for a while, then the A/C Compressor started smoking! I turned it off, and let the car cool.
I'm not going to use it until I get some help here... Do I just need a new compressor? or more? Thanks alot in advance.

It actually cooled off alot! I mean you were right on some parts, but I overcharged it a bit. I also think the compressor is going from the noise it is making.

The 91bird should use r-12 unless it has been retrofitted for 134. What type of refrigerant did you use? Mixing the 2 can cause problems. Whats the highside pressure doing?

Both hoses are hot... I will check my highside pressure today. I retrofitted it then added this stuff called "Maxi-Frig" that is supposedly compatible with both types. I am going to get my system evacuated and then use R-12.
