Hello everyone, Obviously I am new to Toyotas considering I have Cavalier everything.
Well what I was just wondering is that is a toyota Celica a good car? Is it fast? Easy to upgrade? What is the best one to get?
I am very interested in getting a Celica because they just looking awesome! but the problem is that I know NOTHING about the engines or anything, all I know is that they have an awesome body style.
So if anyone has any inof or opinions that would be GREAT!
Thank you very much,
Nick

Celicas are great. I have a 91 GT. Basically major rules are the ST is the slowest worst celica. The GT is the next best with a little more speed. The GT-S is better than the GT, yet none compare to the GT-4. These were no longer imported after the 93 body style was no longer made. In 1999 they were discontinued. They have a hella fast motor in them. I am about to get a 91 GT-4.
Most celicas have problems with the clutch. Once this is replaced these engines are easy to up some power to but if you want serious power you need the engine from the GT-4, the 3sgte. You will hear a lot about this motor. They have been built into hundreds of horsepower racers, oh and they are awd. Regular celicas are fwd.
Boosting celicas is the best way to get power. Read the article on boosting celicas if you really want to learn a lot. Good luck finding that celica that is just right for you.

So I am looking into a 2001 Toyta Celica GT-S right? Well, I hear a lot about these "3sgte" things. What is the difference between these and regular motors?
I guess what I am asking is what is so special about these and what differs from the regualr VVTL-i engines that comes in the 6-speed GT-S that I am looking at?

The VVTl-i Engine is a 1.8L DOHC engine. It is not supercharged or turbocharged. The gt-s comes stock with 180 hp. This 3-sgte motor comes with only 200hp. But it is turbocharged. It is a tough motor that can be tund to hundreds of hp. The new gt-s motor is very difficult to pull that much hp. It can with lots of money and time. I believe after more parts come out for this motor it will be just as popular, just right now it is spendy to fix up.

celicas are great.as far as 2000+ the gt has 140hp(dont get this version) get the gt-s like jaybrat said 180 hp and go with the 6speed to keep it in its power range. the 3sgte was in the 88,89,90-93 and 94-99(not in the us)all tracs or gt4 90-93 are the most popular here and have 200 hp. but the new gts is actually a little faster than the all trac because ti is alot lighter. gut the all trac probably has more potential. it will be very hard ton get and all trac and if you dont like the looks of the 5th gen celicas go with the 01 gts.im sure you wont be dissapointed. plus the 2000+ have many aftermarket parts like a turbo kit which should put ur celica in the 250hp range. they are my favorite celicas exterior wise. and their mpg is not too bad either

basically vvtl-i which only comes in the gt-s is an extra kick of power around the high 6000s rpm range it lets more air and fuel into the engine(lift). ull def. want a 6 speed cause they have a narrow power band ul want to stayu in the high rpms for best results.

wrong, gt is the fastest of the 5th gens, the Gt-s has many more options than the gt making it about an extra 100 pounds heavyer, as well as bigger rims/tires and btw the St isnt the worst celica, in terms of 1/4 mile speed yes, in terms of handeling its the best, its a good 350 pounds lighter with (near) the same suspension setup as the gt/s models (slightly softer and smaller sway bars and bushing but 350 poudns makes up for the diffrence)
and where did u get that celicas had problems with their clutches? i had my cluthc in my from the factory, i bought it as it was feailing, thats about 14 years on the same OEM clutch

So all together, you guys are saying that if i get about a 2000 - 2002 Celica to get the 6 - speed manual transmission, and the motor in there will be ok for now, but soner or later I should swap it for a 3sgte engine?
How much do one of those engines run for? and where could I get one?

make sure its a gts though. if you like the celicas like mine and 91celicast's you can get that and swap a 3sgte for a bout 3000-5000 dollars. its expensive but youll probably run mid to low 14s with this swap and high 14s with a 2000+ gts. the 3sgte has great potential though. just do a search on 3sgte on google or go to ebay to find an engine. make sure u read the "read if you want to do the 3sgte swap" section first. or you could turbo a 2000+ gts for about 250-270 hp.

Well thanks a lot for trying to disprove everything I say Mr. 91 ST. The st's may handle a little better because of weight, but I could get a 91 gt4 (which I am about to) and strip the crap out of it (which I am not gonna do) and drop hundreds of pounds and waste the most fixed up st's on the planet. Heres a concept for you, how often is it that you see tricked st's with 400+ hp. Oh wait... NEVER. The new GT-S celicas do 6.6 0-60. QUOTE: of mr. st. "The gt is faster" then why is their 0-60 time 7.2 Huh lets all wonder about this and wonder why the st's were discontinued. HUH???

And by the way, the 5th gen was not what I was talking about. Of course the gt is faster, they have the same freaking motor. The new GT-S has 40 more hp than the new GT. By the way.

no way a stock gt can go 0-60 in 7.2. a gt-s has 40 more hp so its gotta be more than .6 seconds faster. a gt4 does about 7.2 o-60. a gt might do 8.8 or something like that.and 91 was talkin bout the 5th and 6th gens.

That was toyota's claimed times for the new cars. I'm just passing on their claims and what just about everyone with a 7th gen on everythingcelica.com claimed they could do. The new gt-s does weigh more than the new gt, that is why they are so close. I haven't driven one so I am willing to admit I may be wrong. I have been once or twice before....maybe three times.

The GT weighs 75lbs less...
Despite what you heard from the ricers over at everythingcelica.com.. the 7th gen GT and GT-S are nowhere close. The GT-S is much faster.. just ask anyone that swapped a 2zz into their GT.

So whats a better engine to swap into a 2000 - 2003 Celica? 2zz or a 3sgte?

The 2zz-ge already comes in the 2000+ GT-S. Swapping in a 3s-GTE into a GT-S will make it slower. By swapping the 3S-GTE into the 7th gen GT-S, you will ruin what the car was made for: excellent handling and braking.
The 3S-GTE has an iron block and weighs MORE THAN TWO 2ZZ ENGINES TOGETHER. The 3S-GTE does have more power potential than the 2zz obviously because of the displacement difference and the iron block.
There is only one person that has successfuly swapped a 3S-GTE into a 7th gen. He said the swap cost him a little over $10,000 because of all the custom fabrication it required.. and the fact that he had to build up the 3S-GTE just to make the car as fast as it was with the 2ZZ (overcoming the weight difference).

The "2zz" is in the 2000+ Celica already? I thought it was the VVTL-i?
So what is the first thing you would do to make a Stock 2000+ GT-S faster?

The 2ZZ-GE engine is the only engine that utilizes the VVTL-i technology.

if u want to make any engine better for a start put on an intake, headers, exaust system, and upgrade the ignition. if u got alot of money just turbo it. the gts has the 2zz which uses vvtl-i. vvtl-i is not an engine its just an addition to the engine for exttra hp. its the same as vtec basically.

So what is the VVTL-i? Is it like a turbo, or what is it that makes it so important like the Vtec?
blakscorpion21
07-09-2005, 03:33 PM
its not turbo. it gives the valves extra lift to increase the air and fuel into the engine. it kicks in somewhere in the 6k rpm range.
