Hi, I'm looking around at things to upgrade my 97 ls and wanted to know if this turbo kit is street legal... and anything you guys think that I should go with please recommend. I don't know much so any advice will be appreciated.

Nope, not street legal. It's more that it's not emissions/carb legal. I'd recommend going to turbokits.com, looking at the different kits, and then searching google for the kits' main web sites for info (specifically legal or not).

Oh really I thought all drag kits were legal.

Nope, none of them are. It even says that in the Faq section of their site www.dragturbokits.com (http://www.dragturbokits.com)

Is there a way to run through DEQ with a turbo installed and not running? So you dont like have to uninstall the kit to pass deq

The only legal stuff is GReddy. they are complete with ecu maps and injectors and some other stuff but no intercooler, its around $2000 but its LEGAL so i'd say If i had the money it wasould be my next upgrade.

Damn... Where did you see a Greddy kit for $2000? I've been looking around and the cheapest I've seen is around $2800.

the GReddy kit is legal until you modify it in anyway. if you up the boost or add an intercooler it wont pass smog. just keep that in mind.
you have to know someplace that will pass your car for emissions. i know of like 3 places around here that dont even look at the car when doing inspections.... for the right price of course

Why don't you just build your own kit. I don't think i'd ever buy one. There are so many problems w/ factory kits.
!. The placement of the wastegate on that Drag Kit is bad
2. They use a boost sensitive FMU for fuel management
3. IMO they cost more than they should

:iagree: You hit the nail on the head. Though, building your own kit can also be bad if you don't know what to buy or what you're doing.

:iagree: with you agreeing w/ me.
If you really want to turbo, you can get so much more power and reliability if you do it yourself....provided you know what the hell you're doing.
I have a 99 GSR and i was looking at a drag kit for like $3600. It would have given me about 250whp or so. I went to talk to a guy in Fargo about building a kit and he said that for $3500 i could be pushin 300-350whp easily (depending on the turbo). There are so many more possibilities when you build a kit. That drag kit isn't a bad kit, but the cast manifold is terrible, and everyone i've talked to said that a boost sensitive FMU is a good way to blow your engine up.
I know of a really good website for turbo Teg info, but i'll have to look for it and post back because my computer broke last week and all of my favorite sites were erased.

when i first thought of boost, i just threw out the whole idea of being smog legal out the door.
