Started fine 3 days ago. Since then, I had to replace the intake manifold gaskets and that P.O.S. quick disconnect fitting rear of intake (heater hose). Timely job when you have to tend to a 2 year old, but anyways, put everything back together, plugged everything in, no loose wires, etc. I expected it to crank for a while since the TB was empty.
When it didn't start after several cranks, I suspected the timing, (mind you i noted the rotor position when removing the distributer cap and noted its position when it rolled off the gear pulling it out, and put it back in exactly how it came out).
So I advanced it ( I think.. turned it clockwise standing in front of car facing motor), and it seemed like it wanted to start. So I turned some more, it started and ran for about 2 seconds. When it started, it ran like it was starving for fuel. No biggie, I advanced it a little more to test.. went to crank it, then released the key when it didn't go.. but the starter still stayed engaged trying to crank the engine with the key out and drained my battery.
So here are my questions..
Advancing it that far will do that to the starter? Or was the starter hot as hell from trying to crank so many times so it couldnt disengage? It never backfired while running so I don't think the distributor is 180 off. Or is that a common misconception? Im 120% certain i have the fireing order correct.
Is it at all possible it is 180 off? If so, how? I never messed with the shaft while it was out, I taped the rotor to its housing so it wouldnt move and marked the housing with my "out" and "in" marks.

sounds like your 180 off but how from what you said it doesnt sound posible. try it what the hell do you have to loose? dont forget to reset timing after it starts.

Not 180.. i pulled #1 plug, put it at TDC, lined up the timing mark, pulled off the cap and rotor was almost pointing to #8.. so i'd say i was like 2 teeth off or so. I marked the rotor where #1 should be.. re-set the distrib to its correct place and got it to fire up on the first try. Now just gotta borrow a timing light to finish the job :)

It didn't run long enough to determine how it ran, but when it did run for those few seconds, it seemed to run OK.
My fix was the distributor.. I was off a few teeth, lined up timing, poped the cap, reseated distrib and viola. To set the timing, see my other post..
