Transmission/od problem?

I have a 95 thunderbird 4.6l v-8 wih 75000miles on it and recently have been having transmission or od problems. It happens when I am driving on the freeway about 70 mph my rpm will be about 2000 and then all of a sudden my car will severly hesitate like I ha just thrown it in nuetral and the rpms will jump to abou 3100. this will last about 2-4 sec an then rpms will drop back to 2000 and car will run fine. It is happening more and more frequently. Then last night I was riving and rmps went crazy and just kept climbing, I had to hit the brakes and let rpms drop and kept pressing the accelerator an leting off for about 5 seconds before car would actually drive an rpms dropped. What coul be my problem and what kind of money am I looking at to get this fixed

My 95 did the same thing at about the same mileage. I was lucky to find a rebuilt tranny in the junkyard for $250. Add to that the price of new fluid, filter and beer for some helping hands which came to about $300 for the whole job. Quite a few trannys were rebuild in that year Bird so it pays to shop around a few junkyards to find one. To buy a rebuilt at retail is over $1000. Someone might tell you to try flushing the complete system and installing new fluid and a filter but if it has been slipping for quite a while then the bands won't last much longer (like a slipping clutch) and you will have to buy the fluid and filter again for another tranny anyway. Shop around a few yards and you might be surprised at what you find!

Something that MAY hold you over for a short while until you get the money together is Lucas Transmission Fix (I believe that's the name). I know Lucas makes it. It comes in a white bottle with a pointed stem at the top that you can cut off to control the flow of the fluid. It is a thick liquid, and it fixed my tranny (1st was burnt out) in my F150. So far it's holding up fine, and it's been that way for a couple months. I use it to drive a 35 mile round-trip to work every day.

Like I said, it MAY help, or it may not. It depends on how long it's been slipping. I believe it was under $12 at my local CarQuest.
