The O2 tells the engine the air fuel mix, it has everything to do with gas miles.
After time you get a build up of carbon on it, every high miles car/truck I ever had responded great to an O2 change, including our spare car "Geo Metro".
The only problem is that it's alot of money to replace them, and on top of that I think you have 2, like me (5.9 "360"). I used to sell auto parts in the past, and thats when you had to know somthing not just press a few key strokes, I highly recommend BOSH, they have a self cleaning head.
If you do it yourself, you will need to get an O2 scoket or cut a socket of your own (I did). I would recommend heating up (or just do it after you drive the Jeep) the bung before you try to remove this, as wrenching on this are finds weak spots in the exhaust pipes.
Use some light oil (WD-40) on the threds, you should find both of your O2s right before the converter.
Good luck, I hope this helps!
