New runs for the VR4

Hey everyone, haven't posted in a while. That's mainly because my '93 VR4 isn't working very well and I haven't been racing it. Well I've had some good ones over the past couple of weeks. So, here we go.

Last Saturday night, I was cruising with my girlfriend and drove by a local coffee shop. I notice a V8 Camaro hanging out with a 5.0L Mustang. I've seen them both before, the Stang raced by me when I was driving my dad's Stang and it sounded pretty good, orange conv. The Camaro was burgandy and sounded good too. Anyway, they both pull out behind me and follow, Camaro in front followed by the Stang. I drive for about 10 mins and they go everywhere with me. Note that I was driving the speed limit and signalling properly everywhere, and they would back off and then come racing up to my tail, pretending they were going to pass me on the solid line. They didn't signal once. Finally I came to the highway I was getting on. I think my girlfriend knew what was coming, even though the car has been backfiring really bad and I thought I would be eaten alive. I'm in 2nd gear coming on the ramp with the Camaro RIGHT on my rear end, so before I get on the highway I come onto it. Not so much as a hint of hesitation or backfiring. I hit 3rd very quickly and swerved into the passing lane. Both cars hung with me through 2nd, 3rd I started to pull. They were both trying to stay with me, so I took it to 125mph and shifted to 4th. The road was totally clear so I ended up letting off at 145mph. Neither one was able to lay a finger on me. I pulled alot on them, hard to say how much, but it was alot. It was from like 40-140+ though. I pulled in and braked as they both roared past me and high speeds. Regardless, my point had been proven and I drove normally the rest of the way, which to my girlfriend justified the little episode anyway. Good times.

The second situation was last week heading to work. I get on the highway and notice a goldish car coming up quickly. Two younger guys pass me in this older RX7, a LARGE exhaust coming from each side. I immediately started chasing and passed them somewhere around 100mph. They instantly matched my speed and paced me. After passing a line of cars, I pulled in and they went for it. Not knowing my RX7's I wasn't sure if it was turbo or not. I went into 3rd and hit it, kept it pinned until 3rd was maxed out. I was pulling a few cars on them, probably 5 or 6, went into 4th and kept pulling so I let off and flashed the hazards twice. When they finally pulled up beside me they were going nuts and giving me thumbs up. I reciprocated, and the passanger pulled out a digital camera and started taking pics of the car. Kinda funny I thought. As said in the WRX vs. VR4 story, you don't see too many of these in Canada, so they got their pics anyway. Props to the RX7 though, it was quick. I raced one with a hood scoop before and I'm sure he could have walked by me, fiddling with his boost controller and all.

Finally, I took the car on a trip this weekend with the girlfriend. I'm sitting at some lights (with traffic in front of me) on Sunday, when I see it - a GORGEOUS brand spanking new shiny black Viper SRT-10. He (early 30's with a hottie) pulls up beside me and I start revving a bit moving up. He revs at me, VERY loud. I took off slow so traffic moved up a bit. He went to pass me and cut in front but I hit it, so did he and he didn't have enough room to get by. He pulled out right on my bumper and I sat there in 2nd. I just randomly hit it for about 4000rpm, nothing much but he played with me and stayed there. Too much traffic to be blown away by it, but I thought it was fun that a monster like that wanted to play. Good times. Sorry so long. Til next time...

Good shit man. I’ve always wanted a VR4 and every story I read makes me want to get one even more.

A guy a few houses down from mine bought an SRT10 a couple months ago. He’s like 70 but it’s cool because he drives the shit out of it. It’s kind of weird when I see this 70 year old man tear it up in a Viper. Then there is another guy just two houses down who has an RT10. I don’t see him driving it much, but one night he was with another RT10 and right when I got beside them they took off and I almost shit, they sounded sooo fucking nice.

Anyways, good kills!

Very nice runs. I've been dying to run against a Viper, and they never seem to want to run, or I see them when I'm driving hte wrong car...always bad luck. So have you gotten your driveshaft replaced yet?

This is simply my speculation, so I could be wrong, but...
His sig says stock, and if I remember correctly, that is still true for the most part. Plus he is a 1st gen, which run 2 less lbs of boost stock. So he's got a high 13s/low 14 second car. When I was stock, running slightly faster...I could walk stock 5.0s and LT1s, but on a highway roll like he mentioned, an LS1 would have taken back the lead when we neared 100mph...so basically I'm guessing they were near stock LT1 and 5.0, possibly with exhaust, as he mentioned them sounding good.

I agree, probably lightly modded cars...You know, come to think of it i've only seen ONE VR4 in my whole life on the street. Just before i left for iraq i raced him. They are extremely rare cars where i live in AZ. Even more so than a porshe i'd say.

Thanks for the replies. The driveshaft has been replaced, I'm waiting on a clutch now and I've got new Bosch plugs to go in. Then we'll think about the MBC that's sitting in my room. Hey R32, I actually live just outside of Saint John, NB. My profile must say Woodstock. Me and the gf are coming to ON later this summer to visit her bro. I'd be up for a meet sometime.

I'm guessing the cars were lightly modded, my dad's stang has all bolt ons and we run neck on neck, so they likely had I/E. Again, thanks for the replies, hopefully I'll have more good stories soon. Oh yeah, my gf's uncle took me for a rip in his '94 TA last night, K&N, exhaust, chip...works GOOD :icon16: .
