Satin Black..??

I did a search, but everyone recommended semi-gloss x-18 black as satin black. I've used this before, and it's got too much gloss in it. Flat black is too flat.

This is the model I'm building, and he used semi gloss for the seats, and satin for the rest.. Looks good, and I want to do the same (sorry if 360 spider is reading and thinking - copycat..). Can I mix flat base into semi-gloss to dull it down a little?

Someone mentioned halfords satin spray??? Any ideas?

You could add a little flat base to the Semi Gloss..

I would have to say that Humbrol #85 is the absolute best color for a satin look. and many people have agreed with this on-line.

I always liked Model Masters "Black Chrome Trim". Quite a bit flatter than Tamiya X-18.
But as you said, the best optioon would be to mix in some flat base to obtain exactly the sheen you're after.

Krylon actually makes a Satin Black. I haven't used it, but it looks more glossy than flat, but less than semi-gloss, which I think is what your looking for.

Mick,

I use Halfords Matt black although the finish is much more satin than matt (if compared to say XF-1)

i overspray x18 with Valejo Satin Varnish to get different sheens on the black bits. Did that on the boxster seats to get a 3 colour effect.
Try the valejo AB acrylics - theyre pretty good for cockpit stuff IMO
my 2 pence :)

Thanks guys.. I'll have to have a little play now, so many great ideas to try.

I just feel that spraying the entire interior with X18 is a little dull.. As can be seen from the Honda S2000 built by 360spider, using shades of black makes it so much better looking.

my personal experience with tamiya's semi-gloss black has always beena bit hit and miss. sometimes it's perfectly leather like and sometimes it's just like black water.
what i've tended to do these days when i want some more definition is to mix in a touch of flat black to cut some shine.

Halfords do a 'Matt Black' and a 'Satin Black'. Both go on nicely and usually cover well in just one coat, without primer. Why not try both and use the one you like best?

Halfords often have a '3 for 2' offer on their paints too!

Yep Lurchio mentioned Halfords as well.. After work tonight, I'm there..!! Just having another dilemma at the moment, I might be adding a little bit of red as well..!!
