It is your heater blower motor.

Not sure, but it may be your evaporative emissions canister ( charcoal canister). Read a message where someone referred to one.

It gets vapors from your gas tank, the engine has a vacuum line attached to the canister, and sucks the fumes out while you drive. Don't know much more about it than that

should there be any kind of fluid in there? could the foul odor coming from it be fuel vapors? it concerns me because my truck is really getting bad gas mileage right now and i smell the odor when it is hot out and different times throughout the day/week. any other help in this matter will be appreciated.

There should not be any puddled fluid in it, it would smell like gas if it was no longer working - it would vent gas fumes to the air.

As a start, put new spark plugs in your truck if you have not recently. Make sure you gap them properly. That would help mileage.

You may have to visit a mechanic and see if they can find a gas leak.
