So I'm driving my trailblazer I stop put it in park get out and shut the door with the engine running and the doors lock automaticlly every time.
Say you go to pick your buddy up at his house and its cold out so you leave it running while you go up to the door to get him your then locked out. The first few times this happened I was in my own driveway so I learned not to do it. If you start it up in park it won't do it but if you drive a bit then put it in park your locked out.

Its something you can program. Mine never does it. I used to be worried that it would happen, but it never has. Check the owner's manual.

Yup, its a setting, You want to change it to, unlock on park. While the truck is in park, your doors will remain unlocked. Once you slide it a gear, the doors auto lock, the reverse is so too.

you can also set it to auto-lock only after you reach 20km/h. That way it won't be locking itself just sitting in your driveway.
Although if you do get out without putting it in park, and it then drives away (as blulytes pointed out), then it will likely lock itself right about the moment when you give up on chasing it down the street...

Everyone knows that the doors auto lock when you put it in gear which is good, but nobody has a clue why it would auto lock while your in park, which is not good.

No offense, but leaving your car on with the doors unlocked is pretty unsafe. I'm sure it's some type of new act congress just passed to secure your vehicles because they want to "protect people" *rolls eyes because he's sick of the amount of government intervention lately.
Seriously though...like I said...read the manual! Read pages 2-8 to 2-13. This is something you can fix on your own.
I'm editing this post to include a link to the 2003 online manual. If you are registered through GMLink (GM's owner site) this should be accessible to you (obviously your year might be different):

"No offense, but leaving your car on with the doors unlocked is pretty unsafe" I guess that would depend on were you live, if the nearest neighbor is over a mile away, maybe a bear might steal it. LOL
