Reverse Lambo doors

I've already posted some info on this. I don't care if you don't know about structure but I would like some opinions on what you think about the mod. I'm getting ready to attempt a reverse lambo door conversion with my eclipse and I was wanting to know if anyone knows anything about what I can do to strengthen the car and open the areas behind the rear seat panels. I want it to look like the car in iRobot but I want the hinges to work inside of the door. If you notice in the pic below there are sheilds on the door that hide the hinge. There are cutouts in the body for those to fit inplace. I don't want to have to do that.

I'd be more worried about supporting my door than the car. Thats work waiting to be failed the first time. New door handle maybe ( if you don't bend some new bars)

You need to make sure that the door doesn't wiggle, slide or move on it hinges. Good luck with your support bars on the inside. (that is if you want them hid)

I'm particullarly interested in reinforcing the B pillars. I'm not too worried about the door wiggiling or sliding. The design is pretty solid and I do want to hide all of the workings. None of that crap sticking out and showing all ugly.

I think that I've figured out how to support the door's weight. I'm figuring that I need to support about 120 lbs of weight. The doors weight about 75 to 85 lbs and please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm going to line the inside of the B pillar with a steal U bar custom fit and welded into place then I'll create a roll cage that connects both pillars via an X bar and a straight bar to mount my 4 points to. Of course it will also include bracing for everything else but the X bar will support the doors. I'm shaving my handles and going to remote entry. I like the clean look. Other than that I think a single 1/2 inch steal plate on the inside of the door will give enough support to keep the door from buckling. What do you guys think.

I hope all future cars are like that one from I, Robot, it kicks ass! The movie was awesome too. It would be real cool if you pull this off, fiberglasscivic. Good luck on it, and I can't wait to see the results. I haven't seen anything like that anywhere.

Although I'm not the kind of guy to want to spend that much on lambo doors, good job on knowing that it's an issue of strength for the suicide style. The body panels there are not reinforced at all, so if you work together with a shop to incorporate it into the roll cage, I think you can accomplish this.

Thanks for noting that. I've left that out of most of my planning. If you wouldn't have said something I can imagine that it would have caused problems down the road.

Hey Guys! Sorry it's been so long on an update. I had to give up my Eclipse:frown: when I moved back to NC. I wanted to let you know that it didn't stop me from designing the doors. I've worked a lot of the bugs out but there's still somethings I haven't figured out yet. Getting a good seal is looking to be a problem but I'm working on it. I'm going to modify the application to fit a 93 Civic Si Hatchback. Hopefully there won't be too much I need to change. When I finish I'll post pics. Sould take me about 3 months to get the rest of the bugs worked out and get pics up of a working model.

Fuckin dope man. Do you realize it was one year and one day since this thread was last active? Do you have any pictures of the doors open even though they dont seal well?

No, all the working models I had were on the eclipse I had to get rid of and I never took pictures. There's still a problem with opening smooth an stopping clean. My first couple of designs would opened the door so fast that it broke the door support and parts of the hinge. I'm slowing it down and trying to smooth out the process. I've got the seal figured out I just need to test it. There's also some problems with strength in the hinge. I don't know if it will be able to support the door for long times or if it will last over time with being opened and closed daily. The time I've had to sit and think about it has given me an opportunity to redesign the supports and some of the inner frame work. I'll post pics of my Civic when I get it working even if it isn't finished. Thanks for the support.
