Press release:

Aston Martin Racing has unveiled the DBRS9, a competition car for club and national racing series, and a bridge for teams and drivers looking towards international GT racing.

The DBRS9 is based on the DB9 road car, but shares many design features from the full GT1 specification DBR9. It uses the road car’s aluminium bonded chassis with a DBR9-based roll cage. Aston Martin Racing’s engineers have tuned the standard 12 cylinder, six litre engine to produce approximately 550bhp (an increase of 20%) and reduced the overall weight by 480kg, to increase the power to weight ratio to nearly 430 bhp/tonne. Much of this is down to the extensive use of carbon composite materials for all the body panels (except the roof) and on the interior trim, as well as polycarbonate side and rear windows.

The DBRS9 has a six-speed H-pattern gearbox with new, shorter ratios for competition use, which can be upgraded to a full sequential racing box. The car’s ride has been lowered and the double wishbone suspension has been rose jointed and fitted with two-way adjustable Koni dampers and stiffened competition springs.

While Aston Martin Racing’s focus has been to optimise the DBRS9’s performance, it has also been designed with practicality in mind. Both the seat and steering wheel are easily adjustable, and there is the option of a passenger seat, for demonstration drives. Removable body panels, a modular chassis and a package of spares simplify service and maintenance.

"There are many people who want to race Aston Martins competitively in everything from the occasional track day to weekend club or national series races," said David Richards of Aston Martin Racing. "The DBRS9 opens GT racing up to more enthusiasts and with its levels of performance will offer aspiring racing drivers the experience of a GT racing car without the complexity associated with running a full GT1 car."

The DBRS9 will start at £175,000 plus options and taxes. The cars will be built to order at Aston Martin Racing’s headquarters in Banbury, UK with first deliveries expected later in 2005.

Dr Ulrich Bez, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Aston Martin, said: "Positioned between the road going DB9 and the 2005 Tourist Trophy winning DBR9, this car will make a racing experience more accessible to Aston Martin race enthusiasts. It reinforces the DB9’s performance potential and inherent racing qualities."

Aston Martin Racing Confirms Two FIA GT3 Teams

Aston Martin Racing confirmed today the two teams who will be representing the British marque in the new FIA GT3 Championship in 2006. These teams are BMS, Aston Martin Racing's Works team in the 2006 FIA GT Championship, and Barwell Motorsport, former British Touring Car Championship Production Class winners.

James Turner, Commercial Director of Aston Martin Racing, commented, "We're delighted to develop our relationship with BMS and to welcome Barwell to working with us. I am sure that the new championship will be a great sportscar series and the DBRS9 should be a strong competitor within it."

Tiziano Minuti, Team Manager of BMS, confirmed, "It is a great pleasure to be working so closely with Aston Martin and Aston Martin Racing and we have numerous projects to work on together. We look forward to confirming some exciting drivers for the Championship."

Mark Lemmer of Barwell, concluded, "We've been looking for an international project for some time and this is a natural step for us. We already have three great drivers signed up, of our six, and are in discussion with other interested parties. We are hungry for more success and keen to establish ourselves in the international GT racing arena."

The Aston Martin DBRS9 will be undertaking the first comparative tests against its rivals at Paul Ricard in France on Saturday 3 December.

Aston is also planning a stripped-out DB9, which will appear alongside the lightweight V8 Vantage.

Taking its inspiration from the DBRS9 GT3 racer launched earlier this year, the road version will be more user-friendly, but have similar performance, and will rival Ferrari's 575M. Sharing the DBRS9's styling - although minus the rear wing - the new DB9's body will be made of carbon composite panels. Racing buckets will replace the front seats, while the two rear chairs will be ditched. This will help lower weight by around 250kg.

Powered by a 550bhp 6.0-litre V12 modified by Aston Martin Racing, the lighter DB9 should manage the 0-60mph sprint in around four seconds and have a top speed approaching 200mph. A conventional six-speed gearbox is likely to replace the standard car's paddleshift unit, while the ride height is lower and adjustable dampers will be fitted to the double wishbone suspension. A price tag of around £125,000 is expected.

The DBRS9 isn't road-legal. It is a club racer when compared to the DBR9.

No Tom Papadopoulos wasn't in a big crash at Mid-Ohio.

In this shot the Autosport Designs team has taken Tom's Aston Martin apart to fix a clutch problem. Notice how the entire front end of the car can be unbolted from the rest of the car allowing the engine and front sub-frame to be pulled away for easy access.

Tom had a mechanical failure with his # 43 Aston and didn't finish the race at Mid-Ohio. Johnny Mowlem finished 15th in his # 44 Aston on the lead lap.
