Normal alternator output would be equal to the amount of amperage being used by each powered component in use. The battery voltage should stay between 13 1/2v-15 1/2v with the A/C and headlights on. The gauge in the dash measures battery voltage, rather than alternator output. Maximum alternator output is measured in amps with a load tester and an amp meter. 1999 Altima alternators are rated at 100 amp.
1999 Altima alternators should have a max output within 10% of 100 amps under full load test conditions.

Dear Jon,
My 1988 Altima battery keeps on running down. I have had the altenator checked and it is ok. I am currently using another battery to see if the first battery was faulty. So far the car starts but i have only been using it for 2 days. What happened with the first battery was that it was taking longer to start and eventually ran down. Now i have another battery, it appears to be going the same way, but i am not too sure cos like i said i've only been using it for 2 days.
The alarm and remote locking system has been disconnected (before i bought the car) though the beeps still come on when i open the door and the red dashboard light flashes when the car is parked. Could this be causing the battery to run down?
Additionally, my lights are not too bright, they are pointing too low so i can't see far ahead. How can i adjust them?
Best regards
Regido
