Just replace it... it's like $35 or so, odds are it's old and about that time anyways.

black smoke? smells like piston rings...

Black smoke=unburnt fuel
Blue smoke=engine oil
White smoke=Coolant.

Yes O2 sensor malfuntion can cause black smoke. There is a diagnostic procedure for it. Download a FSM or access one somehow. See if you can download one here (http://www.zeroyon.com)

black smoke can equal piston rings
i went to the dealership to test drive a new SER specv when it came out and they had one that was dropped and tinted out, so i drove it and when i revved it at idle it coughed real bad and spit out jet black smoke so bad it made the grass behind all black and shit, and spit oil out the tail pipe. what else could that be but blown rings?

rofl btw it also had a check engine light, and i asked the dealer what was wrong too see what he would say and he said it just needed an oil change! ahahahhahahahaha

"new" specV? how can it have blown rings already? it's only 2 years old at max. or if it was the B15 se-r's 1st gen that just came out in 01.

Uh, it could be an O2 sensor malfunction, air meter sensor malfunction, injector problem, fuel pressure regulator problem, anything that can cause the engine to run rich...

Compression problems can cause black smoke, but not as likely as blue smoke. IN your case, exacly my question was already asked... How can a brand new car already have compression problems?\

Another coincidence, it has a check engine light on... Low compression doesn't trigger check engine lights. BUt bad sensors do!!!

Is this another one of your "hit or miss" tries at giving advice?
