My dad and I are looking for a car to turn into something like in FAST and the FURIOUS. I don't know a lot about cars so I need some help. How would you build a spoon engine on such a car.

Spoon is merely a manfacturer of high performance parts for Honda. I suppose you could purchase the parts and bolt them on your stock Honda engine.

you can get an engine from spoon, but they are built for endurance racing. on a track. they are expensive...
i know ya dont know much, but f&f is a bad place to learn...
go to www.jdmhondaparts.com or www.inlinefour.com and you will see the spoon stuff...
or go to www.kingmotorsports.com for some mugen stuff,
they are both high priced tuners...
what are you looking to do to your car?

The Fast and The Furious, in case you hadn't heard, is the most inaccurate source of automotive knowledge imaginable. Some of the things you saw on that movie make no sense or are just stupid. Honda does not make the SR20, and as much as I'd love to claim it, I've never seen a 9 second Maxima.
Sorry, folks. I know I whine about this movie a lot, but it spawns confusion and inspires more and more wreckless poseurs to race each other, not realizing that their Civic's tractor-like steering is not going to save the unskilled driver from that next curve...
If you want to learn about Hondas, pick up a copy of Honda Tuner, Import Tuner, or (if you're allergic to g-strings) Sport Compact Car. I read SCC all the time. They have a bit of a Honda slant, although strangely enough the May issue is full of Nissan 240SX/Silvias. As far as high performance Civics/Accords/Preludes goes, you'll be talking B-series engines. This is where you start looking up JDM engine swaps and such. Otherwise, the only real performance Hondas are S2000 and NSX. Good luck exploring.
Since you're a novice, I'll give you some advice. Forget all that Honda/Spoon stuff you learned from F&F and look into some real sports cars: Nissans. :smoker2:

If you want to make a fast car, start with something that ISN'T an economy car. Hondas are made to be efficeint with fuel, not race cars. I love Hondas, but they are just too slow to start with. And if you do buy a Spoon engine, like flywlsi said, they are realllly expensive and require alot of maitenance (sp?). Besides, you can get a kit car that could have supercar times for under $30,000 or $40,000.

true...
but since he is starting with a civic... that is what he is looking at...
if he ever posts again...
there are so many parts out there, it's kinda sad that this guy is all about spoon b/c he heard it in F&F. spoon is really good... but... expensive
now.. assuming the civic starting point...
swap in a turbo b18, and you can get supercar speed...
coilovers and big sway bars... handle nice as hell with some spoon rims and sticky rubber...
and i bet i could do that all for under 25k including the price of the car...
or less if i get lucky on the car...
like a 93 hatchback... that would be my starting point.
so if i start there, i can do it for under 15k.
why get a kit car when you can build a reliable honda? the reliable econ car?

Because when all is said and done, it'll still be a Civic. And there's nothing wrong with that, but not everyone wants a Civic, no matter how fast and/or furious it may be.

all my point was, was that if he is starting w/ a civic... yeah.... build it... that was what i meant there...
if i had the cash for a kit car, i would have one, but the cobra daytona coupe is 65k turnkey, so i think i'll plan on building up a civic to beat it...
mind you, i would rather have the kit car or something else, but i have a honda right now... and i like it... i m not a huge civic fan, unless i'm spending a ton of cash on it...

I wasnt putting civic's down, I love them. I was just offering oppinions/options. I'm trying to think from a father and son project point of view too. The way I see it, the more time spent together, the better.

i know...
but alot of people do...
i cant stand civics at all, unless it is modded, ALOT.
i hate the things b/c there are so many that look like fun, but they are all show. or even could be all go. but they are lame. the civic isn't just a car to me, i guess... it's more of a person...
you can always tell the "civic" guy... euros on a car with stock rims.
big rims on a car w/ factory exh and not dropped.
to me it's just a whole way of living i guess...
kinda like a "budget" starter car kinda thing... civics are cars that guys cut their teeth on, like the 32 ford was back in the day. some were lame, and people got made fun of, but they eventually smartened up... or started driving station wagons...
civic guys are the same... they learn and then they get better. they drive a hardcore civic, or move on. but they don't forget their humble roots...
i'm writing a freakin paper or something... remind me to print this so i can hand it in as a new theory about hot rod hondas or something... geez.

In the end it just comes down to "different strokes for different blokes." The biggest problem i see with civics is the fact that there are too many "modified" ones on the road, or ones that look like they have some balls but really don't. I would just rather drive something that leaves people thinking "what was that? I've never seen one before."

handle nice as hell with some spoon rims
LOL! The only way rims could affect handling is by weight, and there are plenty of lightweight rims available. Or, if you really want to stretch it, the ventilation of the wheel, so that rotors don't heat up as much.

well... since a set of spoon rims weighs in at around 40 lbs for a SET OF FOUR, i guess that would make a difference.
unsprung wt helps in handling, accel, braking... and that would be with factory tires.
so imagine if you step up the tires.

well, the biggest determining factor is if he wants to stay pump gas, in that case a honda wont get him very far without sacrificing alot of weight and drivability with gutted interiors and tall gears. plus FWD has officially had a divorce with traction as soon as you start modding it/removing weight from the front of the car. plus theres the handling cons with FWD, understeer & poor/wrong weight transfer being at the top. most supercars are RWD, with a motor capable of making big power on pump gas, and even bigger power on high octane, handling on rails, huge top speeds , etc etc. none of those i would apply to a civic in my opinion, and theres a few laws that it cant get by, IE the FWD. and a reliable honda title goes out the window when you start modding it, the stock tranny wont like the B18 (if it'll even bolt up, i dont remember what trannies the Type R has) either way do what yout hink is fun, pick up some SCC mags and read up on honda sites online, search on google.com for some tech info, and whatever you do dont over turbo the car, nothings more annoying than waiting till redline to make any boost

ok..
my point was that you could, with a medium sized budget, build a car with respectable handling and damn good speed
and you can have a reliable honda that runs quick, and can handle well. if you have never seen a fwd car oversteer, you havent been around.
you can do it.
i mean come on... my friend had a stock b16 in his si with a turbo. thassit. turbo. (and all the related stuff, but no doo dads to control it) and he smoked vettes. on pump gas. and it handled great. then he sold it.
for 21k.
and he isnt a fwd only guy...
but my point is that a civic is a great starting point for a great sleeper style car that will outhandle, outbrake, and even outrun a surprising number of cars.
