AC problems

Hi everyone,

Some background.
The AC on my 97 Sunfire doesn't work. If i turn the knob to AC, I can't hear the compressor clutch click ON. BUT, if I jump the relay, it does. With the jumper on, the compressor runs, but there is no cold air....so I need a recharge. I swapped the relay with the gas pump, so i know the relay is good.

Now, to the question:
Does the AC have a switch that prevents the compressor from running if the refrigerant has leaked? I want to know if my problem will fix itself if I simply recharge the system.

Thanks,

Snafoo

Yes it does. There is a low pressure cutoff switch that will not allow the compressor to work if the charge is too low. Fix the leak and recharge the system and you should be cool from then on.
