I have been under the assumption that the '86 4Runner is just a covered pick-up truck with an independent front suspension. '84 and '85 models were just modified pick-ups...

1st gen Runners (SFA or IFS) use the standard-cab short-bed frame. Rear body mounts are slightly different and the fuel tank is mounted 2" lower.
Xtra-cab and long-bed models share the same longer wb frame.
All combinations of body and frame swaps are very common, even between generations.
A friend I wheel with started with a std cab, rolled it and swapped on a 4Runner body, rolled it and put on a xtra cab, rolled it numerous times (full int cage), now it's a buggy.
I have a 2nd gen 2WD std cab/shrt bed on my 1st gen 4WD long bed frame.
Anything is possible.
