hard shifting

hello. i am new here and i have searched so here is my problem...my mom has a 99 camaro v6 with an automatic trans. she says that sometimes there will be a high pitched whining noise coming from mid or rear sections of the car and when it does that her trans shifts real hard from gear to gear.
