my shocks/struts clearly need replacing.
any thoguhts on the best supplier for parts like this (does any old autozone have the best prices, or should i be buying off the internet?)
and how big a job is this? is it just a matter of removing/replacing the shock-struts, or do i have to remove all sorts of other parts as well?

well I did the entire suspension in one day. it was a while ago, but it was a pain at times since the car was so old and things were rusted and well fixing old cars is just a pain. but I got eibach springs that lowered the car one inch, and I absolutly LOVED them, that and ummm, kyb II struts I think, new strut mounts, new bolts, everything, but the struts and springs I got were awesome and couldnt have loved them any more. but to do the springs you will either have to drop the knuckle or control arm I cant remember unless you get spring compressors, but other tahn that, yeah its just nuts and bolts, taking off parts and putting new ones on.

You can buy a complete unit..new strut, spring, top plate all assembled and just stuff it in.Remember the alignment and mark it.OR you can buy used units..struts,springs.top plates all assembled.Look at carpart.com and see where there are some near you. Here in Canada..S.Ontario..they will leave the car up on stands. You take them out..pay them $50 Cdn for 2..both sides.By the time Escorts have made it to the bone their original springs have broken and already been replaced.1 more option..go to a bone..get broken springs/struts..that way you will have the top plates..or get them to take them off..buy them. This saves you time fiddling around with your own. With another set of top plates..get your new springs, struts and have them assembed ready. You WILL need a spring compressor.

interesting. you guys know your sh*t.
another question- i had a look at where the rear struts bolt into the chassis. the chassis is starting to rust, bad enough that i can see small cracking around the strut bolts.
is this terminal? i was thinking i could squeeze another solid year out of this car, but perhaps not.
opinions?
