Replacing timing belt

I will be replacing the timing belt on my car in a few weeks and I just have a few questions.

The car has almost 80,000 miles on it, I'm replacing the timing belt and balence shaft belt. Is there anything else that I should replace.

I also will be putting on a set of fidanza cam gears. Would it be alright to remove the timing belt cover or would it be better to cut it in half so that the bottom part is still there.

I read the article on VFAQ.com but I dont see why he removes the cam shaft seal, is it just to show how to replace it?

Thanks for any help.

When i replaced my timing belt (shop did it) they; Replaced timing belt, balance shaft, water pump, all the neccesary belts, changed tranny fluid while at it, gaskets-seals. Mines cost around 450 for the whole thing and right now it sounds way much louder and pulls way harder. They probably did it wrong but i took it to 6.5k rpm without problem but it was loud as hell. It was like i was driving a honda.

usually when you do a timing belt you also do the water pump being as you have to take everything off to do the timing belt anyways. balance shaft belt too and as long as you have the water pump off you might as well change out the coolant.

I dont want to replace the water pump until it breaks. I am more concerned with the timing belt tensioner and tensioner pulley

you might as well replace the water pump while you have everything off. you have to do the exact same thing (remove same parts) to do the water pump as you do when you change the timing belt. 99% of the people that do timing belts, also do the water pump. it's like killing 2 birds with one stone.

yes, its also a good idea to replace the tensioner. i'm not too sure about if the pulley would need replacement, but the tensioners is a good idea.

LMAO. When your water pump shits the bed in 20k miles, please post :)

This is the absolute minimum that should be replaced during a tbelt job:

Timing belt
Timing belt hydraulic auto tensioner
Idler pulley
Tensioner pulley
Balance shaft belt
Balanace shaft belt tensioner pulley
Water pump

Cam gear seals are usually not done, but they fall into the same category as the water pump. You have to completely reove the tbelt to change them, or use the RRE method and remove the gears. Either way, its doing the job twice. You could say the same for all of the front case seals, but the cam seals are the easiest to change. The others take some work, and they come preinstalled on an oil pump/front cover from the factory anyway, if you ever end up replacing that.

The list above is the bare minimum. You should be able to get all those parts from the dealer (no part store horse shit) for just under 300 bucks.

Went to the mitsubishi dealership today to get the prices on the parts. The guy there said that a timing belt was $117, the water pump was $125, He said my car didn't have a balance shaft belt. He said the hydraulic tensioner was $466-Im not even sure if he was looking at the right part.

These prices seem to be a bit steep. I knew this dealer was a little pricy ever since he tried to charge me $75 for a new black door handle.

Do you guys think that these prices are reasonable

do the prices still seem reasonable? And what about the timing belt cover?
