Ok heres the thing. I have been wanting a streetbike since before I could walk. My dad said I could have one but I had to buy it myself. I said ok and saved up some money. Benn saving since I was like 12.
Now he wants me to get a little honda rebel. Dont get me wrong the honda rebel is a nice bike. He says I need practice exp before I get a bigger bike. Ive been riding my brothers honda shadow to work everday for about a year and I have a beatup 125 honda dirtbike that I ride to the football field on all the time. Ive even ridden my dads katanna with no problems. I was thinkiing more of a zx-600R. Im not a begginer. What would yall do in my position?

I would make a compromise. A rebel is extreme on the conservative side, and a zx-6r is extreme in the other direction. I would suggest looking into an SV650. Theyre great motorcycles, and much more versatile and easy to ride than a zx. You cant even fathom the performance jump from your dads katana to a zx.

He decided that if I can ride his katana for the rest of the summer with no problems then I can have a zx.

Sounds like your Dad is sensible, you're very lucky. Listen to him, be careful, and have fun, you'll be riding that ZX-6R in no time. Months go by fast when you're riding often. Welcome to the sport!

I like the way your dad thinks, to be honest... okay, the Rebel is a stretch, but he is being more reasonable with the mention of his Katana... HOWEVER!!!!!!! I would HIGHLY recommend purchasing an OLDER ZX because the performance will be MUCH closer to your dad's Katana than anything that is "too new". I would say look for '96 and earlier.
Oh, glad to have you in here with your interest in bikes!!! :D

How old are you? 16, 17 = what dad says goes. 18, you make your own decisions. Unless you’re 36 and still live with your parents, then that is a tough one.

I think that the zx6 is a pretty good starter for you since you have been riding for a little bit. just keep it safe, and dont show off for the chicks. Rubber side down!

i know it can be tough but you should respect your parents decisions. if you can discuss things sensibly with them then they should be able to compromise. like all parents, they don't want a knock on the door from an officer at 10pm with bad news.
i agree with tange about pre 96 although i really struggle to comprehend how you guys think its good to start on bigger bikes.
death will come soon enough, why race to the finish!
(hey that's pretty wise for me)

Are you suggesting that your father cut the brake lines on it so you would wreck? If that was the case you should be running as far away from the man as you can and hope that you truly are the mailman's kid!

haha.. thats mean.. it could be possible that he ran into a tree or something and it severed the line.. and when u hit the fense completely cut it....
ehh who am i joking... was it a nice clean cut? haha... now take this as a lesson.. check ur bike before u ride it... that would be bad if those were cut and u were doin 75.... be safe buddy.

All kidding aside chubster is 100% right. You always need to do a saftey inspection prior to mounting up and riding out. EACH AND EVERY TIME. If you get relaxed and start becoming lazy you could pay with your life. Safety first!

why would he cut the brake line just to unload? and they BOTH forgot to tell you. the plot thickens... :evillol:
anyway, that was a good thing to mention to check some of the most common things before riding but often overlooked. if that was a bike, I can bet you things could've turned out worse. whenever I ride, I have to brake before I pull out, so that becomes automaticly known. and just look over the tires for things than can be inspected by the naked eye, like nails, and press on it to check for tire pressure. and shift weight to check the bottoming of forks, etc.
