Window Tint

I am going to get a window tint for my '03 cavalier coupe. The guy doing the job suggested 20% tint and anything darker can cause problems with the cops. Would you guys say a 20% tint is pretty dark?

Yeah, 20% is ok in my book. I went with limo all the way around and they went with 20% in the front 2 windows so it would match up a little better with the limo tint every where else and it does match up pretty good.

I've got 15% all around on mine, and I've had no trouble with the cops.

This reminds me that it all depends on your state really. Out here in AZ the cops dont really care too much. Ive seen a few police cars that look like they have 10% all the way around. :lol2:

True. I know cops that have 15% on their personal cars here in AL.

Is there somewhere in the State site that specifically says how much you can tint? Also, how much is it average? From what I saw, it's around $100-$130? Lastly, is the front window allowed some degree of "tintness"? Thanks.

I think the leagal for most states is 30%. I paid $165 for my tint, which is a little high, but I heard they were the best at it. Also...you can put a strip on your windshield up to 6". You cannot tint your entire windshield, and I'm not sure why you would want to. I can't see shit out of my windows at night with the tint on em...why would you do that to your windshield?

Sorry. Yea, I knew you couldn't do the entire windshield (and I know it's stupid lol), but was asking how far... As for whomever designed the position of the sun visor over at GM needs to get fired. The damn things "hits" my rear view mirror everything I flap it. Either that or I need a pair of shades.

I have limo black on the back three, 32% on the front two. Front three are illegal in cali. But the CHP (which I see most out here) haven't stopped me yet. I've even had 2 CHP's sitting next to me, windows up and not stop me. Course, I started shaking so bad. I had just paid $190 for my tint about a month earlier, and was so scared they were gonna pop me...

but CHP is cool, Sheriff's out here are dicks though. I keep my windows down when not on the freeway.

I'm not sure how universal this is to all states, but here the biggest strip you can have is 6" down.

HERE IN IOWA YOU CAN TINT DOWN 6" ON THE WINDSHIELD. THE PROBLEM IS THAT YOU CAN NOT HAVE ANY TINT ON THE FRONT WINDOWS WHAT SO EVER. BUT YOU CAN SPRAY PAINT THE REAR WINDOWS BLACK IF YOU WANTED TO. FIGURE THAT ONE OUT!! :screwy:
THE STATE PATROL EVEN HAS LIGHT METERS IN THIER PATROL CARS TO CHECK YOUR TINT OUT.

I believe the 6" for the windshield banner tint is a universal thing but dont quote me on that. I just know its 6" out here as well so that seems to be the majority. I dont think I would take it too well if I got popped for my tint...I paid $300 for mine and that would just spin me into a new world of pissed off.

And before anyone goes holy shit about how much I paid I got 3M color stable tint as well as just about every kind of warranty tint places do for it. Hell I could get bored one day and turn my tint into an etch-i-sketch and they will replace it for free. That and the work was flawless on my tint.

Thanks for the help guys. I went with the 20% tint and it looks real sharp! I don't know how I drove around without the tint LOL

When I got my Cavy last April, it didn't have any tint on it. That was the first thing I did. Of course I obeyed the law and got the legal tint which here in Nebraska is 35/20.

A month ago I stripped off the front two windows, and got 20% put on.

It's so much better, 35% is too light for my likings.

To me anything above 20% is a waste of money. If you going to tint your windows...get it a little dark. Thats just my opinion. Of course some cops are more strict on tint than others. I haven't had problems, so when I get my cobalt I'm getting it tinted 15% also. I may even go 10% in the back. I have a friend that had an eclips and he had 5% tint front and back and got away with it some way.

Nebraska. What do ya know, I happen to be a resident of your state. I was wondering about legal limits of tint myself. I wouldnt waste the cash on my Beretta GT but once I do get my '03 Cavi I was definately wanting to tint. Thanks for posting that.

Would it seem a little strange if you got more of a grayish color for a tint? Open to opinions.

20 is good until it starts fading. When I first got my 20 done you couldn't see in from the outside and about a year and a half later it is pretty light...I think I'm going to go have some more put on.

Here (http://home.pcisys.net/~bpc/auto_law/tint/) is a summary of all the different state's laws regarding window tinting, where it can be applied, and how much ight is required to be transmitted.

When it comes to tinting is the darker tint a lower percent or a higher percent. for a tinting noob here please explain the terminology also when you guys got your stuff tinted did you get someone to spray it on at a shop or did you have someone roll it onto the window?

I can barely see out of my windows at night. Its really not the best thing to do, but if I need to I can just roll down the windows to see my turn or whatever. As far as seeing into the car, you can't see into the car at night. If I can barely see out I know they can't see in. During the day you can see in depending on how the sun hits the car. If its real bright out then there is no problem with seing in, but on cloudy days...you can't see in too well.

I have a VERY well done tint... :grinyes:

For that amount of money...it better be VERY well done lol.

I got mine done about a month ago. I went for 5% all the way around. My friends said I was crazy.. But I have been sitting right beside cops with the windows up. I think Florida is a lil more lenient than most states.. I also paid about $160..

5% is not crazy because of the cops...its crazy because I know you can't see shit out of them at night. If I can barely see out of 15% I know you can't see out of 5%. A friend of mine had an eclipse that had 5% tint all the way around. Suprisingly he didn't get in trouble with the cops either, but you couldn't see in or out of his windows.

What i would do,is contact your dmv and find out what the max tint is. i think ohio is 15%. Could i go darker on my car, sure, but then i have to deal with the cops, so i dont. cut and dry.
