84 6.9dsl glow plug problem

Wait to start light rarely comes on now at cold start. Quick clicking noise from some sort of relay with a bunch of wires attached on the right fender well. The last few weeks light stays on for a second or two and then I hear the clicking noise. I need to do this several times before the engine will start. Lately no light at all and I have to plug in the block heater to get the engine started.

Trouble shooting ideas and what is the gizmo that is clicking?

The early 6.9L engines used a controller that was screwed into the left cylinder head at the very rear, and they ahd a glow, afterglow, and power relay.

The best thing to do with these, is to pull that system off completely, throw it away, and replace it with the update kit that integrates all functions into a bolt-on controller that fits at the rear-center of the engine. As I recall, the update kit is around $300, but if the truck is in good shape, it is worth every penny,.

I see something on the very back of the right side as I am looking at the engine. My right is your left? and can I just replace this item and what is the clicking thing up front?

The "controller" is at the Driver's side rear, I do not think they are still available, but I believe that is the part you need.

Thanks for your help. One of my sons works for NAPA and they carry it. I picked up a set of glow plugs and a power relay and will install this weekend. I also got some good information on dieselmann's website for the installation of the intergrated controller with wiring tips. Thanks again
