Sounds like a synchro is either going out or is already shot, might want to look into fixing it.

If your trying to shift too fast and your not used to it, it will do it. When I first got mine, I would try to speed shift and it would pop out of third or make grind. Once you get it down you shouldn't have a problem. A short throw might help.

If this happens while shifting normally, its probably the trans.

And welcome to the forums!!!

Isn't there a skip shift in some of those cars? It's to keep you from accelerating too fast. Summit Racing sells skip-shift eliminators that plug into your existing harness to get rid of skip-shift.
P.S. If the skip-shift is just for automatics, forget everything I said.

the skip shift is actually just for manuals, what it does is under low acceleration it makes you shift from first gear into fourth gear, this improoves fuel economy. However i dont know if it would apply to the second to third shift, although it may have something to do with it, i dont know alot about transmissions.

ZZ, I'm having xmission woes too. Similar to you sounds like, pops out of second, grinds fourth. Although we've narrowed it down to me basically needing an entire xmission.

If you find out what's wrong with yours, let me know. I'll do the same.

The 1997-2003 Corvette, or 1993-2002 Camaro and Pontiac Firebird equipped with the 6 speed manual transmission may exhibit the following.

Primary Condition
- Unable to shift out of fourth gear.

Other Conditions
- 3-4 upshift -- hard shift, gear clash, or block-out.
- 4-3 downshift -- hard shift, gear clash or block-out.
- 2-3 upshift -- hard shift, gear clash or block-out.
- third gear hop-out
- fourth gear hop-out.

Replace the aluminum 3-4 shift fork with an iron 3-4 shift fork. The part number of the iron shift fork as of July 9, 2003 is 88996653 and is available only through GMSPO.

The 3-4 synchronizer and 3-4 blocking ring should also be replaced at the same time.
