If you're buying it brand new why would you worry too much? I'm not quite sure what you mean by do's and don'ts, but you really shouldn't put gasoline in it. Be a little more specific, I guess you have to just take care of it, like all engines.

The Duramax is a great engine. I personally have a new Cummins and wouldn't trade it for the world. A truck diesel is a truck diesel; there is a multitude of difference between the Duramax, P-Stroke and the Cummins, but they all operate on the same principle. All burn Diesel oil and use Turbo chargers for that extra oomph and cool sound. You can't beat an Allison trans-they are practically bulletproof. I chose the Cummins due to the reputation, low maintenance, and 40% less parts than the Ford or GM diesels. It's personal preference. As far as driving them? Keep it plugged in if it's below freezing, change the fuel filter(s) every 7500 miles, and NEVER lug a diesel or rev it out cold. Other than that they are the best engine for towing/work bar none.

I just sold my '04 dmax, not cause I did'nt like it, cause I had decided to better invest my $. Anyway I only put 20k on it, but it is simply amazing, and with the Edge juice I had on it, it was downright sick how fast the truck was, and I got 17-19 MPG. I never towed anything, just a bass boat--another reason I sold it. Sold it for couple grand less than I paid for it and bought a '99 1/2 ton, and pocketed a bunch o cash. Clean fuel is a must, and with the dmax you don't need to plug it in--I never even found the pigtail, and it gets cold here in Detroit!
