Well today i went out and drove to my friends house and when we were leaving her house i started my car and it started up but it made the sound like your trying to crank your car when its already started, and it wouldnt stop. i even took the key out of the ignition and in the off position and the engine shut off but the starter was still trying to turn over. It Went on for about 5 minutes while i was trying to pull off the battery cable untill it finally fried out and started to smoke. i have a 92 mustang gt and i have heard of something about the msd power wire and the voltage regulator might have something to do with it. is this the starter? relay?ignition switch?

starter solenoid is sticking, located on the drivers side fenderwell, unless you have a mini starter, then it will be mounted on the starter, dont think they switched to those until 93 though, just follow your positive battery cable and you will find it, easy to replace

I have a 1989 mustang 5.0 with the same problem. I replaced the solenoid and it worked fine for awhile, but started doing the same thing again. After that I took the starter apart and cleaned it but it kept trying to start even with the key out. I also need help tyring to figure out this mess.

When this happened to my 89, turned out to be the starter. I never took the time to figure out why it did this, just know that in my case it fix the problem.

THE SELINOID ON THE FENDER WILL ONLY BE A TEMP FIX CK THE SMALL RED WIRE THAT PUSHES ON TO THE POST OF THE SELENOID WHEN CAR IS OFF THERE SHOULD BE NO POWER GOING TO THAT WIRE AFTER THE CAR STARTS THERE SHOULDN'T BE POWER ON THAT WIRE IT JUSTS OPENS THE CONCTION IN THE CELINOID AT START UP i HAVE REPLACED MINE 5 X SOME LASTED LONGER THAN OTHERS BUT STILL FAILED PROBLEM IS IN IGN/IGN SWITCH/KEY/ALARM i CAHNGED ALL AND IT FIXED IT (TO CK SELENOID TAKE ALL WIRES OFF THE SELENOID AND CK FOR CONTIUITY FROM POST TO POST IF IT IS CLOSED SEND 12V TO SMALL POST CHK CONTINUITY THERE SHOULD BE CONNECTION REMOVE VOLTAGE SWITCH SHOULD CLOSE AGAIN)
