Transmissions today are quite different than they were when your Fiero was built. The TH125 is relatively easy and very tough. The R&R (Remove and Replace) can be VERY costly with Fiero. They're hard to work on to start with. As old as they are now, little expertise is left around regular shops.
$1,700 would be a bit high, but much more realistic than $2K. Different parts of the country charge different labor rates, too. The same job in the Bay Area will cost nearly twice what it would in Richmond, VA.
