hey i checked out the google results about this topic and i tried to unscrew the whole shift knob off and i also tried to look for a bolt or nut that someone else was talking about..but i think i need a new oppinion...i have a 96 4cyl s-10 and i want to replace the knob only...how do i go about doing it ?

The retention nut is under the boot, loosen it then unscrew the shifter

k..im confused..i cant seem to twist it off and the only nut i can find is to remove the whole shaft, but i dont want to replace the whole shaft...just the shifter knob

Well remove the shifter, and then look at what holds the knob on there.
There is a small chance that you'll have to replace the shifter it's self or cut the old knob off.

For the knob remove the entire shifter and bang it off. It doens't unscrew, it's molded to the shaft... For a new knob you will have to use a tap...

No molded... During the manufacture process, the stick is put into a mold and the shift handle is liquid poured on it...so basically you have to break it off the stick.. Some use a hammer, other's beat it on the floor until it cracks, some use a vice.

thats kind of a big risk...cuz this is for a fathers day gift for my old man and i dont want to break the shift knob incase he doesnt like it lol

Well, you can always give him the knob first... Then when you go to install it cut the original one off. Just remember, you are going to have to tap threads on to the shifter top to get the new shift knob on...
