Check engine with vtec controller?

I just rebuilt my engine about 900 miles ago and it's running great but when I turned ny vtec controller down all the way(I think dont really know with no markings) The check engine came on around 7700rpm. Then I turned it the other way and took it to 7500 with no light? Does any one know about the VC-3E vtec controller? is it all the way to the left turns it down or what, plus the light that indicates when youre in vtec isn't there. But I've got some ideas on how to put it back in. Last thing, Before the controller I could hear the vtec kick in easily. Now I can't really tell any way I turn it. Help?

dont know much about your controller but i think you should sell it and buy a vafc from apexi
