underhood cleaning

I've noticed my local self-service high pressure car wash place has an "engine and wheel cleaner" setting.

My underhood area is absolutely filthy due to years of neglect

How would one clean up the engine and surrounding components safely? is it okay to just squirt that stuff on there and then hit it with low pressure hot water?

your best off using HIGH PRESSURE to clean an engine. The pressure does all the work with 75% less water than a typical hose. Just becareful not to spray important electrical parts dead on(distrib, computers, etc) those can be cleaned after the big parts are done.

Never clean a HOT engine, let the engine run for 10-15min max. Warm engines clean up the best.

I've cleaned hundreds of engine with steam, pressure, and a garden hose NEVER had a problem in all theses years. if your carefeul with the water you will be fine.

cool 8) thanks. the car wash is about a minute and a half away so getting there without a scorching engine will be no prob :P

A few months ago I degreased my 13 year old car's engine, and found out something kind of interesting. After I used gunk's "engine brite" degreaser, it did a relatively good job cleaning 13 years of neglect (hand me down car) but there were some stubborn parts on the valve covers that wouldn't come off. Suprisingly Simple Green concentrated cleaner took it off better than the degreaser.
