Friday night I drove Hyde up for a tech inspection for a hill climb race.

On the way home I am going through a town that has 4-5 lights in a row.
I'm in the left lane, and at the first light this guy in a 1972 Jeep Cherokee rolls up next to me. (Yes, I know there is probably not a '72 Cherokee, but it sure in hell looked like it should be that old). Anyway, he's blaring some type of pseudo-rock music and he looks like the biggest redneck I've seen in a while.

Light turns green and I just pull out ... he pulls out and gives it a healthy rave as he gets going. I shook my head and said to my friend Dennis, "Tell me he didn't jsut do that?" Dennis said yeah he did.

So he "beats" me to the next light which is literally only 200 feet or so away from the last one. But there is two cars in his lane. As I go by him he jumpes around them and gets behind me.

Light changes I pull out normal which is quicker than the 2 cars in the right lane and he immediately jumps around me into the right lane again and passes me .... beating me to then next light that might be 300 feet from the last one

So now he is next to me again and he turns his music off.
We had the windows down and the t-tops off ... and Hyde is sitting there all vinyled to hell look silly.

Anyway, he looks over and says "Hey Bud."
I said, "Yeah?"
He says, "Wanna run it all the way to Haven?"

He is refering to Schuylkill Haven PA which is 2 towns away (about 5 miles). What a moron.

I said, "Uh, no. This car is way to fast to be racing on the street."
He smirks like yeah right rice boy
I said, "It's an 11 second car. It's not worht playing out here for me."
He smirks again with the same attitude.

Light changes and he pulls out a bit quicker than me and we get outside of town and hit the last light before nothingness and once again he has 2 cars in his lane and he jumps behind me again.

I look at my friend and say, "What the hell."

My 2-step is always hooked up now, so when the light change on cross traffic I laid into the 2-step at 6200 rpms making 20 psi of boost and blowing 1-2 foot flames out the back (see video on my site) and I let her rip.

I did a very spirited run through 3rd gear and cruised home ... never saw him again. :)

HAHA, nice. I really wish Jeep didn't put out that commercial about the Jeep being quicker than the BMW and Audi (or whatever). Now every 18 year old with his mom's Cherokee feels the need to drive like even more of a moron.

lol nice, love those stories when ignorance is silenced. So you can shoot flames cuz your engine is in the back right? or do you have something else going on.

.... what can I say.

I always said I do not street race.
I never said I couldn't be provoked to show off though :D

"Come on officer, I wasn't racing. I was 35 car lengths ahead ... surely you can't call that a race. Hell, that other fellow was just a spectator!"

:D

OK I'm gonna go out on a limb here.

When a car with a large turbo goes WOT, there is a short period when the injectors begin to run rich, to compensate for the air that is being forced into the engine. This results in a rich A/F ratio, so unburnt fuel leaves the cylinders in the exhaust manifold towards the turbo. If your manifold/turbo is hot enough, some of that unburnt fuel becomes ignited, and thus flames shoot from the exhaust. The end.

haha, don't know if that is correct.

Hyde, do you have video of a 1/4 mile run with that 2-step? If you're launching at 6200 rpm, are you shifting into 2nd immediately?

tha_new_guy, good guess but not right on :)
A 2-step rev limiter gives you 2 rev limiters.
When my clutch is in I have a limit at 6200 and when the clutch is out I have my rev limit at 8000.

When the clutch is in (for a launch), my EMS randomly pulls spark & fuel to keep the revs at 6200. Doing this allows me to stay WOT while sitting still. Going WOT allows me to build boost (20 psi to be exact).

The net result of all of this monkey business is that when the EMS pulls spark, the fuel does not blow up in the engine ... it gets blown through and blows up in the exhaust. When that happens, you get a nice big flame :)

I have video of my drags with the 2-step, but not from behind the car. I will do that at the next event for you!

I launch at 6200, but as I slip the clutch the revs will come down ... but I do jump into 2nd rather fast. That is one of the reasons I went to a 26"+ tall rear tire. Even without the 2-step, I could not comprehend 1st gear with a normal sized tire.

Ahh I see how it works...but would the flames still shoot out the back of the car if the engine was in front...or would they not make it all the way back?

damn rednecks!!! well glad you showed him up, this was the very first time i saw you report a street race..... ever!!!

JekylandHyde
06-18-2005, 06:03 AM
Twizted_3KGT, yes, no ... maybe :D
It all depends. I have seen plenty of front-engine cars shoot flames from running rich ~ just not off a 2-step.

TatII, this wasn't technically a street race :D ... and I do not post street races because I do not street race. I have not posted about my last real street race because I am not sure what the statute of limitations are ... maybe some day I will tell you all why I do not street race any more.

.... another time.
