2000 GP Preventative Maintenance

Looking for some advice for a 60,000 mile Grand Prix: what sort of preventative maintenance is recommended now, versus what can wait? Some recommendations from a dealer (costing over $600 for all of them):

- Rotate tires
- Inspect disc brake system, rear brakes, PCV valve, PVC filter, emission system, spark plugs, wires & connectors, fuel tank cap & lines, drive belts, hoses, cables, lights, filters
- Flush coolant & clean system
- Lubricate & inspect front suspension, drive line, steering, hinges
- Clean & re-pack non-drive wheet bearings
- Check engine timing

Looks like a hell of a lot of "inspections" for 600 clams. The only work being done is the coolant flush/fill, tire rotate, and bearing repack. For that kind of money, all fluids and filters should be changed as well as belts and hoses. All these inspections are is an opportunity to upsell. Out of that 600, allow 20 for the antifreeze. The rest is labor. At 75 per hour that leaves 7.7 hours labor for what a competent tech can do in 1-1/2 hours, 2 tops. Try another dealer or an independent shop. You can do better. But stay away from quick lube places or muffler shops. They arent qualified to inspect anything. Just my :2cents:

It's a 2000 Grand Prix GT. About 2/3 of the miles are highway....

Practically everything the dealer wants to inspect are visual inspections and can be done in about 30 minutes by anyone that knows anything about cars. I think the dealer may be a little agressive in his pricing as I am certain that parts are extra!

If you need new brake pads or rotors the price will go up. Wires and plugs are easy and can be changed with a sparkplug wrench and a plug gapping tool. The belts should be changed if they have never been changed and the PCV and filter cost about $5 at a parts store and are easy to replace. Flushing the cooling system will cost $75. Other filters such as the fuel filter should be changed and lubing the chassis is a good idea as well.

I think you need to go to another shop and get another quote. There are a lot of places that will do brake inspections for free. I hope this helps you make you decision. As you can tell I don't care for dealers!!!

I would listen to Dad. The dealer is a place where you buy cars. But they make most of their money doing stuff on your car that you either don't need or you can do yourself. :uhoh:
