97 Voyager Electrical Gremlin

Hello-

This is my first Chrysler

My 97 voyager has a couple of intermittent electrical problems:

1) After startup, the ac and turn signals work fine. But sometimes the ABS light will come on and I will loose both turn signals and the ac blower. This comes and goes and has no dependency on temperature, speed etc. - that I have noticed.

2) I recently replaced the battery, for some reason the car will be dead and I will have to open the hood and tap on the positve battery post with a hammer - then the car will start. I am assuming I need a new battery.

3) Power door locks - sometimes they lock 1/2 the doors, sometimes they lock non of the doors.

Any assistance you can provide would be sincerly appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

You need to check the connections on the Body Control Module. Unfortunately I am not sure where it is located in your particular vehicle but on these Vans the connections sometimes become corroded and dirty and will cause intermittant problems. As for the battery issue, remove the terminal connector and clean it or replace it entirely. The battery is good as long as it turns over the vehicle but you have an intermittant contact in the terminal that is why it starts when you tap it.

Thanks GTP Dad-

I bought the terminal cleaning kit and it seems to have done the trick. I have never had to do this for my other batteries. Is this a common issue for the top post batteries?

At any rate, I am going to look into the BCM this weekend. It appears the blower motor and the turn signals may be independant of each other. But the ABS light is always on when there is a problem and off when there is not.

Regards,

Paul

Here is more of an update:

I can drive the car for different periods of time, sometimes with, sometimes without the issue.

Here goes, once the ABS light displays, I loose turn signals. The ac blower is fine until I shift into or out of park, then the ac blower stops working.

I took it into a mopar electrical specialist and they could not get the problem to replicate.

KInda sux since it is 90+ degrees every day and you never know if the air will work.

Ok, figured it out.

The fuse block is damaged around the fuse for the turn signal. The fuse was jammed in there and bent. After a minor modification, I appear to be back on the road with no issues.

Case Closed.

Great to hear that you are cool again. Simple electrical problem can be the hardest to find and are the ones we most often overlook.
