I had my '91 Escort GT decide not to start last Monday (before I knew about AF).
It would not even click when I tried to start it.
I ran through the usual suspects.
1. Checked Neutral Safety Switch
2. Checked the battery
3. Checked the alternator
4. Checked the starter
5. Haad the Igniton Module checked
6. Made sure the wiring under the hood was grounded well
Keep in mind this took two days in 90 degree weather and all the patience in the world.
I finally figured out that the ignition switch was faulty at the Start positon.(Fellow at OReilly's clued me into the idea)
This problem was mind-wrenching because with the car able to roll start, I did not even consider the ignition switch to be the problem.
To make matters even worse, the switch took all of 15 minutes to replace. That'll get to you after pulling the starter and ignition module out of your car.
