Not if you didn't have it turned on.
They get pretty strict with anything they think people might like.

i put my name on this....they will pull u over, and charge u for impersonating a police officer lights flashing or not. with all the crimes out her being pulled off with people cating like cops (dressed like them, or having police equipment on their cars) they are real strict nationaly with this. u cant even have a hat that says police, fbi or cia anymore, and trust me if the cops a dick about it he can arrest u and charge u with a few charges. dont do it man, take it from the ex cop, i wouldnt do it.

Yeah I thought that's what would happen. It was just an idea I had and wondered. I like those Funny Cars that are done up like police cars, they are neat.

those cars are owned by the police department, thats why they can use the light bars.
It also depends on where you got the light bars. i can imagine if you stole a set off of a police car, they might be alittle upset. even fake ones would constitute a felony.

What if they were different color lights, like say purple and green or something stupid like that???
I remember reading someplace that it was the colors of the lights that are "sacred".

Yeah, you aren't supposed to have anything like that in any color, but if you get red or blue you are "impersonating a police officer" and it's a lot worse for you.

well even colored lights are illegal for use on the road, even if they arent red, blue, or yellow. They would be legal for show cars that are parked and stationary, kinda like strobes, but you couldnt use them on the road.

Hmm, good to know. So any kind of strobe/flashing colored lights aren't going to go over well with the cops? Even if they are off?

just don't run them in front of the cops, be smart if their is a cop around turn them off, it's that simple. i don't think they would take you to jail, that is just a waste of time unless if your goin to be a dick to them or unless if they are just a really big dick.

well, if they are subtle, you will probly be ok. If you have a big light bar that looks like a police bar youll probly catch shit. If you run them on the street, youll get pulled over. but other than that. have fun.

there's a website somewhere that the police dept actually sells their light bars, but they have a statement in there saying that the lightbars are strictly not to be used on POVs (personally owned vehicles). They just sell it for show in your bar or garage. It's pretty much impersonating a cop if you put it on your vehicle even if you don't use it. Most of the time I tell if a car is a cop is by looking for the bar on top. And even if they didn't catch you they can use the case of you might be trying to pull people over to high jack their cars and whatnot. Best bet is to call your local police station or just do something dumb like speed and when you're pulled over ask the cop what you can and can't do with it. just my two cents though

Well if I were to do anything dumb with it, I'd turn it on and fly down the highway, lol. But mostly I was thinking how cool they are on show/non-street drag cars.
89IROC&RS
06-15-2005, 03:32 PM
i wouldnt want them for a drag car, wind resistance out the bootay. We worked on a few police impallas at the dealership cuz they were pissed that the car was supposed to do 126 (computer limited) and the cars were topping out at 115. through comparison to a otherwise identical civilian imallas we found the reason the police cars were slower was that they had all the wind resistance from the light bars and antenna.

Lmao, that's funny.
That's a good point though..... hmm, maybe a plexiglass shield to ramp the air up without hitting the flat front face of the lightbar.... or those slick new highway patrol bars, they are really low and aerodynamic, I think it might be so they aren't as noticable.

cars around here in virginia use LED bars inside the car so the outside is completely clean. the bars are so thin you cant see them unless you know exactly what to look for. Unless they are on that is. kinda hampers the visibility from inside the car though.

It's probably so people don't notice them. Now if they would just get better paint and real hub caps, you would never know untill it was too late.

dude, the highway cars here, you cant tell the difference. we have interceptor camaros that have chrome rims and factory paint jobs. The LED light bars and alot of times the have a cute little female highway patrol officer driving. If i didnt know about those cars from working on them, id have been nailed by em several times, and not in the good way.
