Trying to sell it eh?
There are ways around that, if there is a computer, it knows. It is also a felony if I am not mistaken to dick with the odometer reading. Might be wrong on that though.
Either way, that is dishonest. You could very easily be fucking someone over. What if that someone was you??

Indeed, very bad show mate. Besides I don't think that would work. Drive the car in reverse for 40,000 miles.

they'll find out as soon as they carfax your car. whenever it was last inspected or taken to a shop(i think) they log your miles on to the DMV.

Yeah, if you car has any real value for a normal person, you can throw it right out the window if you do that.
Maybe you can sell it to someone that will just set it up for drag racing.

I was wondering because I saw someone on ebay trying to sell one and I thought if you did that all of the lights on the dash would stay on and never go off. And no people I'm not trying to sell my car I love it too much.I have seen people put four gen dashs in a thrid gen camaro I will find the link. I know they dont have the same mileage.
Plus now that you mention it I think I was got by the guy who sold me the car the mileage number to the right spins continously. In a quick month the car would say I drove 2,000 miles. No were near right but at least It hasnt broke down on me. Except one time and that was when I forgot to get gas.

yup, it is a stupid question.
The cars mileage is recorded throughout its lifetime, they WILL know you messed with it.
EDIT** I take back my comment, i thought you were trying to lower the miles of your car.

not sure if this will help, but I've looked into replacing my instrument cluster because its in kilometers (my car's from canada) with a NEW MPH dash. It says right in the owners manual that if you make a note with how many miles were on the car before you replaced it and put it on the door its perfectly legal.

You can change the speedo without a problem And it isn't illegal unless you try to pass off the new odometer reading as actual mileage. I changed the 85 MPH speedo in my 85 IROC back when the car had 35k on it and the odometer nazi's didn't come and arrest me. Also, on the third gens the ECM does not record mileage of the car, only the odometer does.
If you do swap it and decide to sell the vehicle you must disclose that you changed the speedo and you should also tell them (if possible) the mileage on the old speedo and how many miles were on the new one, just to be as gonest as you can. Of course all of this is moot once a car reaches a certin age where they just say that the odometer readings can not be verified as accurate.

Sorry if I 'attacked' you, but in your original question it sounded as if you were trying to cover up your miles.
I'm glad you asked this, I was wondering the same thing.

Ha my odometer has rolled over twice already. I could just say it's only rolled over once! JK I wouldn't do that. I am proud that my car has over 200,000 miles on it, and still runs.

im not gonna fall for the "Whoops thats not what i meant" bull. Your first post clearly outlines your intentions of using a dash from the SAME YEAR car with LOWER miles and if you could get away with it. Damn right i jumped down your throat, and you only changed your story once we all did so that now your saying you want a fourth gen style dash in your car. i wasnt born yesterday.
As far as putting the fourth gen guages and such in teh car, it would be a technical challenge because the fourth gens had a differnt electrical control system to operate the guage cluster and such. It could be done but its a pain in the ass.
As far as the odometer reading, you can go to the dealership and they send it to a specialized company who can reset the odometer reading legally and you dont have to worry about it. what do you think happens when an odometer breaks. it has to be replaced in order to make the car legal.

Hey I dont have to sugar coat nothing here if I wanted to do it I would point blank. The reason I'm asking is simply because I see them for sale all the time. I have no intention of changing the miles, more less sell the car thats why this was titled dumb question but curious. This is my first car I may have banged it up abit but that just opened the door for me to invest over nearly 2,000 grand in it. When I brought it had 166,000 from what I know mileage does not mean a thing as long as the car is well kept and new or rebuilt engine and transmission. I have all of the paper work for the car from day one. Now it has 178,000 not too bad and I have not had one major problem. Gm put a brand new motor in the car I have the certificate.

Well anyways, not our fault if you did do something like that anyways. They warned you, the ball is in your court in any case.
So what bout the 93-97 and 98- clusters? Are they interchangable or are they different enough?

The thing everyone needs to realize about the odometer is that it records the miles on the vehicle, not just the engine. Over time wear and tare on the tranny, buschings, suspension, and chassis, all are measured in mileage. So regardless of weather or not you put a new engine in, the odometer reading should not be changed. simply tell the potential buyer that the engine has fewer miles than indicated.
Regarding electronic controled cars and digital odometers, the BCM and PCM keep track of the mileage on the car and the odometer must match unless you want error codes. This is where the company comes into play that i was telling you about. You can retreive the mileage from those modules, and then you send the cluster and the written mileage to the company, and they fix and reprogram it to the correct reading.
