94 formula auto 1-2 shift problem at WOT

OK heres the problem, the car drives fine untill you take off in 1st. If you're light on the pedal you wouldn't know somethings wrong. But when you go WOT in 1st the car doesn't want to shift from 1st into 2nd.The car also shifts after riding the RED LINE at WOT throughout all the gears. I just purchased the car so I don't know how it has been taken care of. I'll start with changing the fluids and see how it acts. Any suggestions?

i dunno nuffin about autos.....someone has to have an auto lt1 in here tho

I had a 95 TA A4, it did the same thing, right before the tranny went out. Luckily I sold it before that, but I did talk to the previous owner. I would definitely check the fluid.
