maybe it's juts me, but i have been trying to find the specs on the 1996 infinity system and haven't been successful. mainly the wattage/volts of the amp, head unit, and speakers.
my system still sounds fine today, but i'd like to change the head unit to one that utilizes mp3 cd's. so i'm looking around the web to find this out so that i can line up a new head unit to replace the stock one with.

I thought I'd help with your search. I found on-line the original options listing for a 1996 JGC. According to the manufacturer, the amp with the infinity gold system is 120W.
I tried finding specs on the head unit, but haven't found any yet. My guess would be that you would want to keep a new head unit at about 30w-35w per channel. The amp is more than enough to keep the Infinity Golds sounding good. I have the same set up on my '97, no complaints.
Hope this helps..

Hi guys- 96 JGC ltd
The two right (front and rear) speakers on my IG system are rattling pretty badly in the base range. It appears the previous owner spilled a strawberry milkshake on the back one... Is there a place to pick up direct replacement speakers (at a reasonable expense)?

Just about any 6 3/4" speaker will be the right size for the openings, although you may have to drill new mounting screw holes. Also, 4 ohm speakers will be muted compaired to the factory 2 ohm Infinities. I wasn't able to find the the OEMs for under $70.00 each so I changed everything. :)

Thanks Steve! Hey I just read the description of your GC in your signature, went over and saw the picture in the other thread. SWWEEET! Good job! Now I'll have to see if the Mrs will go for THAT!

I went to Best Buy and Circuit City to find speakers, as all 4 doors are blown, good thing I have the factory sound bar on the roof, but they do not have 2 ohm speakers, I did find a really good set on www.crutchfield.com http://www.crutchfield.com/S-V9YfHfnFWIg/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?wm=fp&I=108507CS&g=400
use the link above to go right to the speakers, they are big money but if you want to avoid the orignal problem of them going out in the firstplace then you have to pay, those speakers are the same for the front and rear.
Do you have the buttons on the back of your stering wheel to work the radio? If you do a new head unit will not work with them, unless you get Spock to re wire it for you. I would think of doing this, buy a 10 disk Mp3 player everyone makes them and some work off the factory input for a factory changer, I should know I bought a factory changer but was missing the cable from thr head unit to the changer, I found one on ebay it's not a used unit , it's new the person also sells new CD changer units that work with the factory controls.
I love the wheel radio/cd controls I would not change that, you can change the amp and speakers so that it really thumps, I have ll the part numbers from best buy if you want them, however it was around $1300 instlled.
Good luck

I do have the steering wheel controls and I too really like having them there. I have no desire to change out the head unit, if I want to play MP3 files, I'll go to Costco or WallyWorld and buy one of those plug-in jobs that uses a memory stick and one of your FM frequencies...
I've always been told that 90% of good sound is in the speakers, 10% in the head. Sure different heads have different bells and whistles, but if I had to choose between dumping money into head or speakers, I'll go with speakers...
Thanks for the speaker link!

You don't have to change the head to go to a 4 ohm setup. You just need to change the amp. The head unit supplies high level (Speaker) outputs to the amp which then powers the speakers at 2 ohms. Change the AMP to a 4 ohm amp and then change the speakers and you're set.

Steve , thats what best buy told me, they said only the amp would have to be changed, they however dont have the amp I needed to run everything so I would have had to goto 2 amps, I only want one. My plans were for the 10" speaker box that gos over the factory net box in the back on the pass side, and different high power speakers all around including the sound bar on the roof in the back.
Without running a sub you can get away with a 4 channel amp, but if you add one more channel you have to use a 5 channel and Best Buy does not have one.
I know other places have other stuff but I stress on Best buy as they have done great work as well as being able to remove and reinstall your stuff for free when you sell the car they also put in stuff you buy from outside the store.
I run a 1.5Gig Rio in my JGC it works just fine with the tape hookup (I have not found one FM unit that works 1/2way good) as well as I have the CD in the head unit.
Hope this helps anyone thinking about best buy.
